To raptor or not to raptor

I just got my 74gb raptor but windows won't recognise it. The hd appears in the device manager and in the bios but not in 'my computer'. What could be the problem?

In right click the my computer icon in the start menu and click on Manage-->Click on disk management on the left-->Select your drive-->Right click-->Activate

That should do it :)

That's right :D . But why windows didn't recognise it as with my older drives?

Were the older drives plugged into the computer when you installed windows? That's the only reason i can think of as to why i don't need to activate a drive.

They were. But i remember windows used to auto detect my drives. Oh well....benchmarks now :D

What do you think then mate, I am looking at getting a raptor soon.
Do you find it noisy and have your boot times got better ?

Thanks.

I can't tell you about the boot times since 'for the moment' i only have it as a backup drive. I would provide some screenshots but they don't allow attachments :o . As far as the noise goes its pretty quiet. Also while transferring some files i did notice that its faster than my other seagate drives.

Seek time is faster on the Raptor but my set pulls ahead with average read & burst. I've seen better results with the Seagate 7200.10s as well, but they cost a bit more. The Raptor 74GB costs about the same as my RAID set and is faster than the 36GB one.

Just to put the 7200.10's into perspective.

My main install is on a raid-0 array of 2 7200.7's.
I also have a single 7200.10, (presuming you have sata2) the 7200.10 is faster than the 7200.7 raid array :) (only just mind)
I had a 36gig raptor for 4 days a few weeks back, its lack of read and write speed was no good, and the faster response time rreally can't make that much of a difference.

I dont find my Raptor 74gig 8meg any more noisey than any other Hard drive! To be honest I hardly hear it!

Well i can hear my one at full load but its not THAT noisy. I do recommend a special case to shove it in though as it reduces the noice quite a bit.
