Tomb Raider - Rise of the Raider PC

Well the game is the worst PC game I have played in a long time and this includes batman AK.... Might look great and have great gameplay etc. But the performance and stability is awful on my PC regardless of settings and looking at steam forums, there are quite a few others with the same experience.

Time for an upgrade or buy an Xbox... :)

Ran perfect for me at max settings 1080p on a 980m... Smooth as butter as they say...

For the people who say the game runs perfect with regards to performance, start a new game and when you get to the soviet installation (the saw mill area) and geo. levels for the first time, take screenshots with your fps and frame latency showing please :)

Yeah it's a real shame it doesn't work on your PC Nexus. We tried most things to get it fixed and working, very odd.

Thankfully it's running well on my PC. I can live stream it just for you if you want to enjoy it lol

Yup, it is a shame as I loved the last game and was thoroughly looking forward to playing this but with the fluctuating fps regardless of settings, it is not enjoyable at all, maybe with free/g sync, it would be acceptable but regardless, it is crashing every 5-10 minutes that has killed the game for me. If other people weren't having the same issue as per the threads above, I would have done a fresh install of windows and possibly even changed my hardware but as it is, it doesn't look like there is an issue on my end and something with the game coding or whatever just isn't playing nice with my PC.

Haha, no thanks.... I wouldn't want to watch some noob playing :p :D

At least with the game being broken, it is giving me time to get through assassin's creed syndicate though, no crashes and performance is great with 1-2 settings turned down a notch.

Anybody been stuck in the Ancient Cistern?

I need to throw a can onto the raft but it's upside down and I can't jump on it. I've tried to restart from checkpoint and gone away to do other stuff but it's still the same. Bloody annoying!

I've not long passed the Geo level and didn't notice anything off with performance in either that or the Soviet section.

I'm not running an fps counter (Windows version of the game won't display AB osd) and cba to check afterburner logs or anything unless I notice something dodgy when playing.

If it did do any funny business, it wasn't apparent.

Turn off gsync, run a fps overlay and then get back to me about how smooth it is in the big open areas of the game ;)

Why would I do that ? Your basically saying if I disable features designed to make it smooth it won't be smooth ?

Not sure I see the point. I have no interest in fps as long as it is smooth which it is.

Sounds like you need a G-Sync monitor... :D

The Xbox One does a pretty decent job and remains smooth considering its lowly spec and AMD based graphics I imagine it's bad optimisation that's causing PC issues...

I've already uninstalled the game and can't be bothered to reinstall but I was getting around 38-45 fps in those areas with everything maxed at 1440p on an oc'd GTX970 in those areas and didn't notice any stutters or poor frametimes. I could comfortably play and it felt smooth enough. It probably was sub-40 or around 40 (of course there were a lot of scenes where the game was staying closer to 45-50 and above) most of the time but that was to be expected when running maxed at 1440p with graphics of such calibre.

EDIT: That's without G-sync or other trickery

Why should we buy expensive monitors just to get 1 game to run smooth?

I have countless games on my PC that run smooth 90% of the time i.e. 50-60 fps with a frame latency always below 20ms, anything higher and the game isn't enjoyable for me, <15ms frame latency and it is buttery smooth.

Being obsessed with having pure smoothness in everything I watch/play even to the point of having to use the "hated" smooth frame interpolation on my TV to get rid of the micro stutter in films.... I would love to get a g/free sync monitor but I am not going to lock myself to one GPU vendor especially for just 1 game.... besides there are no sensibly priced good 34" 1440 100HZ screens....

Well the game was designed primarily to run on consoles and they use lowering settings @ lower res. with lower FPS plus their own methods for a low frame latency and certain tricks to hide stutter i.e. motion blur, also iirc the Xbox version had async. shaders enabled unlike the PC version.

And yes that is what I am getting at, the game certainly seems to run great for lots of people but there also seems to be a rather large minority who are having performance and stability issues. I don't think anyone can deny that the game could do with some more optimisation, even the developers themselves have said that they are working on more patches to improve the game.

Fair enough if you can play at those frames and not notice any stutter etc. Personally I can't, 45/48 is the absolute lowest I can go.

The game runs flawlessly on the very linear parts and tombs but anywhere remotely open on my PC and the fps just varies between 30's and 50's regardless of settings.

This is with everything on low/off and my max fps was 55, not exactly "good" in my eyes when the likes of assassins creed syndicate can get the same FPS (and more consistently hold that) yet have WAY more going on in terms of an open game world + pretty good graphics

Yeah there are some who do seem to have no issues at all.

Saying that, as above, what might be smooth for one person won't be for another.

Yeah true. I just might not be as sensitive to it as some.

As for crashes etc, you and I had terrible issues with Batman AK (sorted for me now btw), while some others had none for example.
PC's can be a right ballache sometimes.

Batman arkham knight ran really well for me at the start, I had to use Kaiden's tool though, in that time I had only 1-2 crashes iirc, the 3rd/4th last patch completely broke the game for me though, couldn't play it for more than 10 minutes without that crash and even after a further 2-3 patches, it still wouldn't work :( I did a fresh install of windows 10 and no more crashes at all + the game ran without any hitches then, although I think there might have been 1 or 2 patches between then and the last time I played it so it could have been down to them as well maybe...

I have had more crashes in my 12 hours of this than the 55 hours of batman AK :D :p :o

Well, it felt smooth because there just wasn't any stuttering. For example, getting 45-50fps in Arkham Knight felt horrible on my rig because th game stuttered like a crack addict and everything felt off. Rise just didn't exhibit anything like that, even at lower fps.
I'm very prone to framerate fluctuations and can feel stuff like drops from 60 to 55 in Dying Light but this game just felt good at that sort of fps, especially cosidering that I was maxing it at 1440p. At 1080p, it was practically 60fps maxed.

Of course I'd prefer locked 60fps but it felt good enough not to take away my enjoyment of the game. I didn't expect it to, but it did.

G sync works wonders and tbh for me it's as big an upgrade as adding an SSD. It really makes a huge difference. I only have it as my laptop has it. I had no idea how good it was until I tried it on a previous laptop. I doubt I could play on PC without it now tbh...

If you are obsessed with smoothness then look at G-Sync or Freesync or whatever the AMD one is it is fantastic you will not be bothered over fps counters again.... :-)

For example running GTA V on my laptop with everything turned up and the FPS drops to the mid 30's at times but it still stays buttery smooth. The FPS goes from 35-100fps and I notice no change in smoothness....

Yeah I had that, I had to go back to a save game before I'd entered that tomb to fix it.

Some crazy claims being made on this thread lol.

Someone saying they ran the game maxed at 1440p on a 970 and getting 48fps in the geothermal area. Really? My OC 980ti is getting around 50fps in those areas at the same claimed settings. Are people actually measuring fps or is it just a 'feels like it' type measurement? Are the settings really maxed or have you simply reduced some settings to a level that's 'close enough'. I think it's a disservice to everyone when people start exaggering stuff like this.

Oh and then there's someone who can't notice a change in smoothness from 35fps to 100fps. Gsync or not that is truly lol worthy.

I was on about GTA V it jumps around from 35-100fps but remains smooth. I was merely stating G-Sync keeps it smooth without any stuttering...

Are you a little upset that people with less powerful cards are getting similar results to you... :D
