Too good to be true? (cheap MR2)

Pardon my ignorance, but was there a UK edition of the turbo, or are they import only? I want one, but the insurance makes me cry.
MR2 Turbos import only, me and Jez never had a problem with insurance and aload of people on the owners club dont seem to either.

Hes looking at J Reg MR2's its only fair to compair like for like.

The MK2 MR2 was made in the 80's afterall so I think it has aged a lot better than that Supra. :p

Although im sure the MK3 Supra would have been in production a fair bit before the MK2 MR2.

Yep 1986-1992 Its more like a MK1 MR2 but as it made it into the 90's with the MK2 MR2 they are comparable. ;)

ive always thought that supra looked like a mk1 mr2 on steroids.

rlm - shop around for insurance. it is a gp 20 car but the more specialised insurers might surprise you

No, he is looking at £5k MR2's. You know very well the sort of Supra that was recommended :)

Made in the 80's - only just. It just scraped in by virtue of its release in 1989. The Supra wasn't exactly far behind, 93-98 versus 89-98..

LOL.

The MR2 is one of the best looking coupes ever. I guess it doesnt look as bloated and fat as a lot of new coupes. If that's dated then that's fine by me :)

I couldn't agree more.

It is all a matter of personal taste, although I would say the MKII does not look dated at all and is destined to be a classic.

I love the Supra, but purely on the performance aspect, especially the twin turbo version. As looks go, they are not a particularly good looking car in my opinion.

Insurance is the only thing stopping me from buying one really, can part exchange my current car for just over £4k and then pay the rest, which companies are worth looking at for insurance, I only know of the main companys and they all laugh at me.

Cheers.

Yup, dated. It's mainly the popup headlights which do it, really. It doesn't help that there are now a hell of a lot of shabby, unloved ones around either, although thats not the cars fault I agree. eidolons is absolutely stunning but you'll see 10 scabby ones with small wheels and Orange indicators and old looking back lights for every 1 you see like his old one.

Still nice looking cars but unlike many of the older Jap cars they look as old as they are. RX7, Supra and FTO have stood the test of time better.

I tried bell, they wanted £2600 :p

I'd be 21 when I get it (Jan) and have 1 years ncb, thats why they don't like me.

All of which were made a fair bit after the MR2?

RX7=1992
Supra=1993
FTO=1994

RX7, 1992. Supra, 1993. FTO, 1994..

Not exactly a fair bit, especially considering that for the bulk of each cars time on sale, the others were also available. Plus, most of the MR2's you see are, as the RX7's and Supras, on K-N plates.

Ok took a look at the Scoob this afternoon. Only a visual look this time to check it over generally. Seems in reasonable condition - few small bits which could be tidied and being red it is slightly faded - again a good wax/polish should help that.

Going to do a HPI check - does anyone know one I can do with just the reg plate? RAC only shows the basic details (which are correct) but required the VIN for detailed info.

I'm guessing the main thing to get checked with this would be the engine/turbo? Its done 114k miles which shouldn't be too bad for a car like this?

Opinions please :)

Had a passenger ride (there is problem with brake disc which will be fixed before sale) in the Scoob today and it was ******* quick. I need to get insurance quotes before taking it further.. my only problem is the amount of work the engine has had. The 2.0l Turbo should be around 215BHP standard - the garage say it's had some work done (not on the turbo) - chipped, induction, dump valve etc - so it would be pushing 250-270bhp roughly. This makes me a bit uncertain as i'd rather have it at stock.. going from 125bhp to 250+.. don't think I'd last a week lol. It has FSH etc and they've just taxed it so that side of things is ok.
