What would be your top 10 nokkon without series counting. I'm intrigued to know! As you make games dont you or something along those lines (graphics artist maybe?)

Thanks!

Josh

I'm graduating my final year at University doing Games Design. I'm a 3D Environmental Artist, which is basically a level modeller and texture artist. Writing a Top10 would be difficult... I'll have a go. I'm at work in 30mins for 90mins so I'll have a think then.

Wicked! Be interesting to see because it may not be entirely based on story or theme but with graphical achievements.

Josh

Gradius (SNES + the PSP Gradius collection - Yay!!!)
Thunderforce 4 - Megadrive
Mario Kart - SNES
Street fighter 2 - SNES
Tekken - PS1
Streets of Rage II - Megadrive
Guitar Hero - PS2
Super BomberMan - SNES
CastleVania IV - SNES
MotoGP6 - Xbox 360

All I can say is thank god for emulators!

Oh, it would definitely lean that way. I spent the entire time playing Gears of War (both times infact) walking upto objects to admire the normal mapping and texture alignments, dirt maps, specular maps etc.. as my first impression rather than thinking about how the game played or that it just looked 'nice'. I guess when you're involved in something you look at stuff in a different light, which isn't always a great thing... after all, I never used to be a graphic whore, but now it's a major part. But, it's that certain something that makes a great game, that something you just can't put your finger on, as a result I don't think it would differ to a lot of peoples games lists, however, I may appreciate certain elements in these games that others don't.

So, my Top10 (in no order):

Desert Combat
Desert Combat had, and quite possibly still has, the finest usage and control methods for vehicles ever put into a game, the team were then hired to work on future Battlefield titles, unfortunately certain vehicles, notably the helicopters, had to have a more simplified control set applied for a wider audience.

Halo
Halo was absolutely brilliant in Co-Operative split-screen and was the first time I was truly blown away by a games ability to maintain such a high level of graphics, comparable to that of the single-player campaign. I still remember being in awe of the high resolution grass textures and waterfalls on level 2 and the ocean in 'The Silent Cartographer'. It also had a masterful orchestral soundtrack, which for me, is yet to be bettered.

Gears of War
The best usage of normal, bump and specular maps ever put into a game. The effort that has been put into reproducing high resolution rock models for columns to be placed ontop of a lower resolution had me staring at the most simple things for hours. Anyone can see it looks good but when someone who does that themselves and is still in awe can really appreciate it. Absolutely outstanding achievement.

Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3
Hours and hours and hours of gameplay time, the perfect control-set and great environments. Easily the best TH title, I remember missing new-years because of this.. I was playing at 7pm, next thing I knew it was 4am and another year. Scary. Graphically it was nice and crisp with some lovely colour schemes and texture maps, a perfect example would be the 'Canada' park which was beautifully realised. Real effort went into producing excellent texture maps that were varied between areas.

Mario 64
Absolute genius. Metal Mario. 3D.

Broken Sword
Beautiful artwork which was only bettered by the stupendous writing. The finest adventure game EVER made. Unfortunately, it was it's own worse enemy as the 2nd title, a great game in it's own right, paled hugely in comparison despite having sharper graphics (which for me were less artsy). They had to change it to 3D in an attempt to better it for #3, again without success (and another good game).

Goldeneye
The first time I ever felt a game had truly changed the way I felt I had to play a game. It was linear, but directed in such a way you felt you weren't. At the time the graphics were outstanding with real faces and enemies that looked like enemies. And the multiplayer...

Max Payne
The best a story has ever been implemented into a game without any doubt. Graphically at it's time of release nothing could touch it. Infact, for 18-24 months after nothing could touch it. Walls disintigrated under gun fire, players really reacted to being hit with bullets and it added something (bullet time) that was 'revolutionary' and played as a feature and not as a gimmick which is incredibly difficult to do.

Max Payne 2
It's the most blown away by graphics on a PC title I've ever been. To this day I don't feel they have been bettered because everything was so subtle, not once did it ever go out of it's way as if to say 'hey, look what I can do graphically!' and that for me was a sign of it's class. Beautiful textures (my favourites EVER in a game, amazing character models and another fantastic story. It's the first time I've ever played a game and whilst playing it thought to myself, 'This is the best game I've ever played'. Unfortunately it was a little too short, but everything about this game was ever so sweet.

Half Life
The finest use of game direction ever in a game, so good infact that games still use this as the benchmark for direction 10 years later. It was so revolutionary that games are still trying to do something that wasn't in Half-Life. When you play you feel you are Gordon Freeman, realisation of being the lead character is a difficult task and something that is difficult to match, even today you could count the games on one hand (and 2 of them are above this). Also included with the game was a version of Worldcraft level editor, and after using this it cemented the fact that this is what I wanted to do for a living, so I suppose you could say Half-Life is the biggest influence I have ever had.

Of course I am liable to change this at any time, I've been influenced by so many games and I've been lucky enought to be at the right age to appreciate all of them. Yes, there are some glowing admissions from my list (Tomb Raider, Zelda, God of War, PGR2 etc..) and it does hurt to leave them out, I would struggle to write my top 30.

Not really ordered, just numbered so I didn't have to keep counting...

1. Sonic 3 (Megadrive)
2. Pokemon Red/Blue (Gameboy)
3. Gran Turismo 2 (Playstation)
4. Gears of War (Xbox 360)
5. Halo (Xbox)
6. Super Mario World (Snes)
7. Speed Devils (Dreamcast)
8. Resident Evil 2 (Playstation)
9. Burnout Revenge (Xbox 360)
10. Perfect Dark (N64)

It amazes me, how people put Goldeneye above perfect dark. I admit its an EXCELLENT game, but Perfect Dark improved upon it in every single way, and added lots more beside. Perfect Dark is the best console shooter to date, and likely will never be bettered imo.

No particular order:

Perfect Dark
GTA series
Gran Turismo series
Tekken 3
Final Fantasy 7
Final Fantasy 8
MGS series ( you can't leave out 2 because its a part of a whole story and without 2 it would be all pointless)
Pokemon Red/Blue (rather embarassing to admit)
Toejam and Earl
Syndicate/ Syndicate Wars

Goldeneye (N64)
Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time (N64)
GTA 3 (PS2)
Super Mario World (SNES)
Halo (XBOX)
Street Fighter 2 (SNES)
Oblivion (360)
Diddy Kong Racing (N64)
Pokemon Red/Blue (Gameboy)
Pro Evo 6 (360)

I don't understand why some people have listed a series as one point, and then split up another series into serveral points. It should be individual games, listing a series ruins the whole point of the thread. Also, there are a few pc games mentioned, a pc isn't a console :p.

Mine, in no particular order:
Mario 3
Mario World
Sonic the Hedgehog (megadrive)
Guitar Hero 2
Pokemon Yellow
FF7
Legend of Zelda: Windwaker
PGR2
Trauma Centre
Wii Sports

Mostly older games, but they are the ones that have captured me most over the years.

Perfect Dark was excellent, no doubt about is. As a game I'm not sure that it could ever beat Goldeneye for the simple fact that you were Bond. You could be Oddjob or various other Bond villains eventually. The "Bond Factor" made it a better game for me even if Perfect Dark was supposedly better.

My top games:

1. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
2. Goldenye (N64)
3. F Zero X (N64)
4. Street Fighter 2: Turbo Edition (SNES)
5. Desert Strike (Megadrive)
6. Sonic The Hedghog 2 (Megadrive)
7. Super Mario World (SNES)
8. Revenge of Shinobi (Megadrive)
9. F Zero GX (Gamecube)
10. Pikmin 2 (Gamecube)

Not sure I can arrange them into a specific order, they are all pretty much interchangeable.

Too many to Choose from...

  • Sword of Vermillion - Megadrive. Used to spend hours playing this RPG, though it was the best thing since bread and knife met.
  • Gran Turismo Series - PS/PS2. Played for hours and hours on these, never got bored, until PGR3 came along that is :)
  • PGR3 - Xbox 360. Simple, yet addictive, fantastic graphics, cracking online play.
  • Final Fantasy 7 -PS. Wow, this game took away several months of my life, fantastic graphics at the time, never ending gameplay.
  • Metal Gear Solid - PS. After years of nonsensical shoot 'em ups, this comes along and changes everything, must have completed this 10 times.
  • GTA3 series - I never much liked the original top down GTA stuff, no depth, but the series we know and love now, ok the graphics were not great, but they served a purpose.
  • Tomb Raider - PS. Just loved these games to bits....
  • Gears of War - Xbox360. Raises the bar when it comes to graphics and sounds.. amazing depth, visuals, and gameplay.
  • Tekken series. Never liked fighting games until this, again enough depth to keep you hooked for days, and longer.. Just always trying to pull off the 12 hit combo for King...
