Will that run it without a window, and how will he stop the client?

Nope, it'll open it in a command prompt window and he'll have to stop it using Ctrl+C to avoid losing the WU. As far as I'm aware there's no easy way to hide the client window without installing it as a service.

As for HT... the Stanford line is that you should only install one client on an HT CPU. It will actually give you slightly more points running two clients, but each WU will take almost twice as long to run which is why Stanford discourages it. I'd recommend you stick with one unless you're really hardcore about the points :)

(edit) Aware this is all getting a bit complicated... benneh, perhaps you should try the service installation to see if it affects your system? 90% of the time it doesn't, especially on an HT CPU.

I think you're all making this too confusing talking about flags and registry edits and stuff. None of it is necessary i don't think.

The setup i showed you above leaves both -advmethods and -forceasm as default. If you wanted to change either, you would say yes to advanced options and it would ask you if you wanted them as questions.

It will say do you want to enable advmethods, allowing you to download new advanced workunits. This is set to no as default. It will also say to you want to enable optimisations (-forceasm) and you can say yes or no. The default is yes, thats what its set as currently.

Although i've never had the need to start and stop it regularly, i just set it as above and leave it.

Enabling optimisations does not set the forceasm flag. If it did I wouldn't have to do it manually on every client I have ever installed.

Ohh i see. So forceasm is a flag to force it to use optimisations after a crash, and the option to use optimisations in the setup is for optimisations generally?

Yup.

With -forceasm on, optimisations will always be used.

With just the config option on, optimisations will be on unless the client was previously shut down improperly.

With the config option off, optimisations will never be used.

Right. So far I've followed the instructions in the sticky. Got my console running (I said 'no' to starting at startup btw, so edited the shortcut with -forceasm -verbosity 9 ). It's running, but only at 50% cpu, even while I'm doing nothing else.. Is that wrong?.

So now how do I find out whether or not it's actually doing anything/what it's doing etc?. And how do I make sure I'm folding for the team etc.

Thanks again guys.

Edit, is it safe to use -forceasm /-verbosity 9? on an unattended overclocked pc?.

Yep. When the client crashes it is programmed to go into a sort of safe mode and just use "standard loops". The reason behind this I suspect is if there is an issue with the optimisations, so rather than get stuck in a cycle of crash->restart->crash->restart....etc it just switches off the optimisations.

Yes it means you get work done, just very slowly, but it is bloody aggrivating when it takes a few days for you to notice :(

50% cpu is normal on HT CPU. Basically HT is pretend dual core, and with just one client you're only using one of those pretend cores.

You can use FaHMon [link in sticky somewhere] to monitor your client and use the stat pages to see your production. You will need to dump at least 1 WU for your name to end up in the stats.

That's what my consoles showing when it starts up, is that ok?.

Gonna get fahmon now and have a looksee. I'm all excited.

Nope, that's fine - it's because your CPU has HT. Windows sees your HT CPU as two CPUs, so it thinks you're only using one of them, hence 50%. In reality an HT CPU is only one CPU, so leaving it as-is is just fine.

-verbosity 9 is totally safe, all it does is increase the detail in the log files. If you have a stable system, there'll be no problem running -forceasm. My system runs a 900Mhz overclock with -forceasm with no problem. Just keep an eye on it to make sure it's completing the work OK.

If you entered team 10 in the config, you're folding for the team. :)

As for finding out what it's doing... that's where Joe's suggestion comes in.

(edit) Just seen your screenshot. That all looks fine :)

Getting a rubbish WU the very first time seems to be pretty normal, for some reason. That'll take 2 or 3 days but then you should hopefully get something better :D

Damn, now fahmon's being gay. When I open it (FahMon.exe) I don't get the "Download current projects" screen, just an error (couldn't add an image to the image list). Any ideas?.

That's what happens when you get told not to go into the advanced options and set -advmethods to on ;)

Joe42 - in my office please!

:D

edit: actually a rubbish WU is probably good for starting on - eases you into the more memory-demanding WUs a bit more gently :p

Sadly there seem to be millions* of these huge Gromacs WUs around at the moment!

*43777 left on the server, to be precise.
yes they're still on the server cos most people have switched -advmethods back on after we ran out of 600 pointers :p

I have nothing but sweet WUs on all my machines at the moment
/touches wood :o

Never had this before... try downloading and/or unzipping it again?
