Hi all

Looking for some advice on a pc + monitor build.

Built a mostly budget PC back in 2018 with some help but completely out of the loop as to what's what nowadays.

Have always had Nvidia GPU/AMD CPU but open to anything. Had a look at some recent threads but they mostly seemed pretty high end - looking to spend <2k.

Doesn't need to be anything mental, just looking for something that can keep up better with modern games - my 1070 is showing its age now.

Lastly, what's the best way to get hold of windows? I made a bootable USB using an old windows 7 key I had before, is there a better way?

Any advice/recommendations/warnings are welcome, thanks for taking the time to read this.

Cheers

CPU - been upgraded since 2018, currently ryzen 7 3700x
Motherboard - original, AB350 Gaming-3
Memory - Team Group Vulcan T-Force 8GB (2x4GB) DDR4 PC4-24000C16 3000MHz Dual Channel Kit - Grey (TLGD48G3000

What make and model is your psu? A 5800x3d would also be a nice upgrade from your 3700x. The problem with that is as you will be replacing the memory and cpu I would rather spend the money on a change of platform and jump to AM5 for some future upgrade ability. A 7600X is about the same performance as a 5800x3d plus it's much cheaper so the difference in price will cover the extra needed for a 32Gb DDR5 kit and the only extra expense would be a new motherboard.

Thanks for the replies, thanks for the recommendations regarding upgrade option.

PSU - EVGA 450BT 450W 80 Plus Bronze Power Supply - pretty cheap I know, as I said it was budget at the time. Part of the reason why I think a fresh start may be best as well. Upgradeability is also something that's on my mind so fresh mobo/case would probably be the best bet. Going down that route, do you have any recommendations?

With a 3700X and 1070, you would need to spend a fair bit, because that's already quite capable and the lower-end CPU/GPU hardware is no faster (or not much faster) than what you have.

This is the lowest-end of what I'd consider upgrading to:

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,174.84 (includes delivery: £11.98)

(Use of CPU's box cooler assumed)

Better:

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,700.84 (includes delivery: £11.98)

Nope, that's still fine, though while the key will work with Windows 10, I'm not sure if you can do that with Windows 11 (you could install and activate Windows 10 and then upgrade through Windows update).

The way I see it is that if you are replacing the cpu and memory you may as well jump to a new platform. Like I said earlier, the 7600x is around 5800x3d performance, maybe a tad better, plus it's cheaper than the 5800x3d so the money saved would pay for the extra needed for DDR5 and you only have to find the cash for a motherboard.
