Total War: Rome Remastered - 29th April Release Date

The series peaked at Medieval 2 for me. I tried Empire but it was almost too grand, and then additional complexity they introduced for Rome 2 lost my interest. I don’t have much (ie none) interest in Warhammer so didn’t try those, and the smaller releases such as Britannia I also felt bombarded with complexity from the off.

I feel that the TW series has suffered from the same blight of many long running game series, where added complexity does not necessarily equate to added fun.

Agree very much with that. I kinda liked the idea of Napoleon and Empire, perhaps more for the gunpowder element. But I didn't care much for their settings, more so Empires.
I didn't like Shogun ones either, again not a fan of that period of history. I tried very much to get into that game, the second one, but it just did nothing for me, yet it was rated very well.
I'll wait to see what this remake / remaster has to offer. From what little I have read they are adding to the game with the introduction of merchants.
As mentioned before I hope that the Medieval II gets reworked again, altho IIRC I used various mods when playing that.

I used to see posts requesting the first World War period covered, that could be fun if they ever went as "modern".

Looking forward to it, the original is good but has rubbish performance and the bugs!

Hopefully it comes out before Warhammer 3... because it will never be played if it doesn't.

So basically you want Warhammer's gameplay, but in a historical setting? :p

Warhammer 2 wins for me. It's not overly complex. There's very little micromanagement. So the gameplay is very focused on conquering and battles. The Warhammer setting also solved one of the Total War series' longest running issues; faction diversity. There are 15 distinct races in the Warhammer games so far. And some of those races have more diversity within their own sub-factions than some entire TW games (*cough* Shogun 2 *cough*). The fantasy setting has also given CA a lot more breathing room for adding interesting gameplay mechanics; Warhammer DLC is rarely just a new faction with some new units and a new Lord now. It'll come with new gameplay ideas to set the new faction apart, often making them play completely differently from anything else in the game currently.

If you can get over the fantasy setting, this is the pinnacle of the Total War series.

Looking forward to playing this tomorrow. I’m a bit worried about the recommended specs though.

Seems incredibly modest for a new 4K remastered game. Even with the enhanced graphics pack the minimum recommended GPU is a lowly GTX770.

Might have nothing to do with it but, iirc, didn't they "change" a lot of their animations some time back which meant much greater improved FPS...? I do remember things like arrows looking very "different" when in flight, as an example, which helped to greatly improve the performance but to me didn't look as good in some ways. Been a while since I played a Total War game tho and I have lost touch.

enjoyed Empire but only did one big game

Rome 2 I wanted to love it but its not Medieval 2

Troy is ok but then got it FOC

warhammer its ok but meh

Does the game come with Blood effects by default?

Cant play any war game without it... even though it means little, I just feel like im more immersed if I see my men carved up. Feel sorry for them :D

Its what i liked about Warhammer.. when I play as Empire and my men are eaten by some of the giant spiders or crabs etc, think.. damn that must hurt.

Normally they release blood as a cheap DLC.

The new ui takes some getting used to, the battle camera feels very narrow in it's FOV to me as well. I'm not sure on all the new artwork on the menus and loading screens either, I think the original had a better look to it.

Other than that it feels OK to me so far, it's rather odd having it perform so well after all these years :D

Seems to have got some mixed Steam user reviews so far. Not sure how much was expected from a remaster, rather than a full remake.

some comparison screenshots here...

Looks awful. What's with the bar graphs and RPG +10 stats? This isn't WH.

And the general traits. So they've kept them in, but there's no intrigue, no mouse over any more. It's just crammed into excel boxes with all the information in full view.

Amateur hour.
