Total War: Rome Remastered - 29th April Release Date

Getting worse performance than Warhammer 2 for all the talk of optimization the game runs like crap.

And the UI is terrible feels like something from a tablet game.

Refunded for now, will pick it up again in the future if any decent mods come along.

If you're getting it for half price, then pick it up as it will be modded soon (by people such as the ones that work on RTR).

So glad I passed it looked like crap to me, like a mobile game with a terrible UI, and zero improvements to gameplay. The You Tubers were in raptures over it so that immediately irritated me, 17 years on and is the game any better?

No it's not, you can call it a remaster a remake or whatever you like the truth it's a huge missed opportunity.

Requested a refund. Still looks like a 15 year old game and is so dated in gameplay. I hope they refund me, I played it for 102 minutes according to my library

Funnily enough it's made by the same guys who did the iPad version a few years back (Feral).

No thought went into this travesty whatsoever. It's just a nostalgia cash grab, I can see it's shelf life being very short, no-one outside the absolute hardcore audience is going to play this for very long. It will need some very good overhaul mods and huge UI improvements or it will sink without a trace.

As someone said above the gameplay is so dated now and as much as I love the original that's clear, when people get over the nostalgia and play the game for a while it won't be long before they're loading up modern TW titles.

Was about to buy it before I read some comments in here, not the biggest fan of remastered games but I love Roman stuff, maybe they will do Rome 3 one day.
Money now gone towards Warhammer 3 instead.

Is there a mod that improves the UI to the old UI?

Original:

  • Income per settlement? Always visible.
  • Public order? Right there.
  • Construction and recruitment? Two clicks, max.
  • Even the strategic map showed everything you needed at a glance.
Remastered:
  • Default map shows way less info: no income, less city data. (yes I know you can turn them back on)
  • You have to dig into toggles or settings to re-enable basic stuff.
  • The new icons? They look “modern” but they’re not as readable or consistent.
  • Important visual indicators (like unrest or plague) are subtle or buried.
The new icons for units are terrible compared to the old ones imo.

But for me the remastered is worth it just for the modern hardware compatibility and ui scaling, alt tabbing, etc.
I play on so many different setups, from 1280x800 (deck), to 2160p (pc's), Surface laptop (2496 x 1664) to 3000x2000 (MS Surface Book), old games are a bitch with aspect ratio, resolution and UI scaling.

As for gameplay, I think Rome:Total war has the best gameplay of the whole series, followed by Medieval 2 and Shogun 2. Modern TW games are a bit rubbish in comparison imo.

I feel that the TW series has suffered from the same blight of many long running game series, where added complexity does not necessarily equate to added fun.

THIS! Very well put.
I love total war.. Well, more the idea of it now.
I started MANY years ago and loved it. However, as you say, they seem to just make it more complex, more 'detail' and ruin the feel and fun of them.
I think the last one I really enjoyed was Med2. I've played a few others since but it just gets too boring/complex and feels like a chore. It is similar to Football/Wrestling/Boxing games for me. They feel they have to make it more realistic etc and doing so have ruined what made the old ones feel fun to play.

The series peaked at Medieval 2 for me. I tried Empire but it was almost too grand, and then additional complexity they introduced for Rome 2 lost my interest. I don’t have much (ie none) interest in Warhammer so didn’t try those, and the smaller releases such as Britannia I also felt bombarded with complexity from the off.

I loved Medieval 2 and Empire, but it all went downhill from there. I wanted Medieval 3, but not anymore, they’d ruin it.

I can understand that. At this point, with, seemingly, so much that has changed with what once was CA original development team I am not sure what they would produce with a Med 3 release. I doubt that it would be anything that I would have liked it to be.
