Total War - where to start?

Crusade missions basically get to where ever its telling you to get to and capture it, in your case cairo. You got to do it quickly as like you said men start deserting.
Shogun 2 is a very good game, put a lot of hours into. Can I suggest after you get bored of it, try the darthmod. Its a very very good mod, heres the link to the features. You can download it on steamworkshop.

Start with Medieval 2, I still play it regularly, it's a masterpiece.

Then try Shogun 2 and finally, Rome 2. The first Rome was amazing when it came out but it's showing its age now.

Empire is good but I don't like firearms/cannons, I prefer swords/shields/pikes/archers/cavalry charges.

I started with Shogun 2 and there was a bit of a learning curve but nothing too drastic. I also tried Empire and just couldn't get into it at all, I'm not sure if it was the time period or the game mechanics though.

I've sank the most hours into the first Rome Total War, and Empire. I absolutely love Empire. I love the time period, the trade mechanics and the technological advancements.

As a new player I would probably recommend Empire, or if that time period doesn't take your fancy then either Rome 2 or Shogun 2 as they'd be slightly easier to get into mechanics wise.

Attila is everything Rome2 should have been, so id skip Rome2 and just play that instead. I can only assume the people recommending Rome2 haven't played Attila yet otherwise I cant think of a reason they would recommend one and not the other?

there's a f2p moba version if you just want to have battles.

Shame its so bad (currently at least).

- 10v10 format just doesn't work, teams are too big for any meaningful co-ordination
- No strategy, whoever masses/zergs wins
- Long queue times

It seems I spend more time in lobby/queue than I do in game. Its a shame, I really wanted it to be good but I just cant enjoy it in its current format. :(

After 9 hrs got bored with Medieval 2 so going to move onto Shogun 2. I played Shogun 1 when it first came out and enjoyed it so be interesting to see what Shogun 2 is about.

Rome 2 person here,

I enjoy it and after learning slowly how it plays via single player campaign, I'm finally holding my own against CPU...even if 1 turn takes me 20 minutes! :D Even if I am in year XXX AD whatever, who cares :)
