'Town building' esque board games - 2 people - Suggestions?

This looks amazing! Thank you for drawing attention to it.

Fantastic game, worth a punt.

I’d suggest watching one of the 30 mins or so long ‘how to play’ vids before attempting your first game… and it will only make sense after you’ve played it once.

I’d say it’s 2 hour game minimum if everyone knows what they are doing. 3-4 hours if people are learning.

If it’s town building your after specifically, then Suburbia is an obvious option. As close as you’ll get to SimCity.

7 Wonders: Duel (the specific 2 player version) is very good for two players.

Farm rather than town, but I'm partial to Fields of Green and, unusually for a 2-4 player game, it's pretty good with 2 players too.

Agricola it's farming though not towns

I think there was another game like it where you built a village but I can't remember what it was called.

Settlers of Catan gets boring fast once you know the strat, don't get why people like it.

The less people playing the less fun as well, but once you know what resource to prioritize and which dice numbers are gonna come up the most it's kinda meh

There's a 2 player version of Agricola called All Creatures Great and Small. Both are excellent. Very punishing though.

Alhambra is worth a look but is a 3 player minimum.

I think Settlers was, for a lot of people, their introduction to the "new era" of board games after growing up with games like Monopoly, Cluedo, and Game of Life. Compared to those it's a truly great game, and there's a lot of fun to be had in your first few games, the combination of which leads a lot of people to have bright memories of the game. I certainly remember have a lot of fun with it when we first played it (with a German edition, no-one who spoke German and just one guy who had played it at a con and mostly remembered the rules). But it's not a game that holds up very well - it's biggest flaw, imo, is that it is possible to lose the game very early with no hope of comeback, yet be stuck playing for another half an hour with nothing to do but mess with other players. There are much better games out there.

I definitely enjoy Machi Koro, and it works fine for 2 players, although it's a bit more fun when there is 4.

7 Wonders Duel is great (for 2) as well.

there must be an edition that comes with rules for 2 players because I only ever played it as a 2player game.

We wouldn't have even bought it if the box said you needed more than 2 people

I was going to suggest Dorfromantik that came out earlier this year.

It's in our Steam library, seemed quite chilled when I had a quick go a month or so back, but there doesn't appear to be a two player mode.

Base game works great at 2 as well as the resources scale accordingly. Except clay. Man I hate the fight for clay!

1 more vote for Catan but I will also throw in Citadels (2-7 or 2-8 players depending on which version you get).

You buy districts from the cards in your hand to build your city. The game ends when someone builds 8 districts. Though being first to build all 8 districts does not gurantee that they are the winner it simply gives them bonus points.

Turn order is determined by the 8 or 9 character card (Numbered 1-8/9) that are passed around at the start of the turn. You secretly select your character from those card as they are passed round the table (or what ever is left if you are unfortunate enough to be the last man in a 7/8 man game). Each character has unique abilites, so you pick your character based on what sort of strategy you wish to play for that turn. Though you may want to be careful about being too predictable in your character selection. Picking the most optimum character choice may end in heartbreak ;).

The expansion has new character cards with different abilities that introduces new strategies to the game.
