Toxikk - Frag like it's 1999

Could be good, will wait and see. Was an insta-buy until I saw vehicles being mentioned.
not sure about vehicles, vehicles ruined the feel of unreal tournament for me
I'm in! Looks ace and no levelling crap....bonus!
I agree with all of the above

Not really into vehicles in FPS games

I used to play the quake and ut series of games online and this looks similar.
It seems like a lot of developers have tried to bring games like this out and got little following ( I guess so many people are into FPS games with modern weapons or tanks "omg look at me in my tank!" ... "BOOM ... BOOM ..." )
The whole leveling thing is a bit annoying also, trying to get newbies into games where people who are experienced have bigger, better guns is a bit counter productive.

I've not played quake or ut for ages but I'm sure it would make a nice change, especially if it gets a competitive following and possible sponsorship for tournaments, altho I think the new UT will probably be the next big FPS of this type (or maybe I'm just being hopeful)

Not sure about the pricing etc

From looking at the store it seems they will be charging for "CLAN ADMIN PRIVILEGES" and "PRO LEAGUE CAMOUFLAGE SKIN", "AMOKK CAMOUFLAGE SKIN"
Sounds a little DLC like

Does this mean every clan will have to pay for these admin privileges?
It mentions using their own servers

"Your rank will show other players how experienced and skilled YOU are"
Who cares?
Surely games like quake, ut etc were fun because ranking, stats and badges never existed. People just played for the fun of it?
A lot then went on to being competitive (eg: I used to play tdm/duels etc) but the main point is everyone should be equal without any ingame 'status' or e-peen

--- some info I found from their forum ---

Supporting LAN-play is not yet on our list
will there be dedicated server support (for self-hosted servers)?
At this point it is planned to have players with Clan Admin Privileges run their own servers on our farm (go to: http://toxikk.com/store/ and scroll down to the Godlike package to get an explanation for "Clan Admin Privileges").
So every clan who wants a server will need to pay the developers for the privelege of gametime on a server for matches

Doesn't seem much like a 1999 game to me, NO LAN & NO DEDICATED SERVERS :o

Sounds like a diablo3 style always online drm fps game pretending to be UT99 while charging extra for the privelege of hosting matches

It does just say "Vehicle Modes"... it doesn't mean "Vehicles everywhere"!

Why the hate? Surely having them as an optional mode is better than not having them at all. If it's better without them I'm sure there'll be a core contigent that choose to play without - like infantry only modes in BF2.

Being put off a game because it has optional modes for things you don't want is a bit OTT.

Because balancing can happen due to these vehicles being in other game types. But regardless of that it is taking developer resources away from the 'arena fps' and putting it into the fun casual mode.

It'll be used mainly for matchmaking - a bit like Halo I imagine.

Unlock, stats etc ruined fps for me.
What's wrong with just joining a server and finding out there is a player there is godlike, you just remember their name?

Back in 1999 hardly anyone hosted their own server on their own machine. You bought a server from a hosting company. Sounds like thats the model they are proposing. Clan Admin seems to be access to a dedicated server 'in the cloud'. And with a single payment rather than a subscription, it doesn't sound too bad?

Thats the truth.

Remember when i first started, for nights on end i would play against those godlikes... school'd, beaten, i learned, became the better. I still have those names forever etch'd on my mind.

hard to see any major effort in the fps genre not having those compulsive stats and ranks that take away the just for fun element.

In 1999 I remember having hosting from wireplay/multiplay and demon internet but I also remember hosting servers at private LAN parties.

What they proposed with toxikk was a always online client (no LAN) where you book game time for a match on their own servers. (but only after paying extra for clan admin privileges)

Which is completely different.

they have just announced that they will indeed have dedicated servers and LAN http://forum.toxikk.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=287
Sounds like a step in the right direction but the whole "need to have Clan Admin Privileges to host a match" is still off-putting

Still looks like they will have their own ranked servers (like battlefield) using Clan Admin Privileges and seperate unranked private servers.

Unlock, stats etc ruined fps for me.

Completely agree with this.
The ability to just jump into a game where everyone is on an even playing field from the start was so much fun.

I will still look over this game as the whole arena based action FPS is fun but so far not liking a lot of the concepts, pricing, unlocks or false claims on the advertising.
