Toyota Corolla Estate

The CVT drove me borderline insane in my RAV4 to the point where that and a few other things forced me to get rid and go back to an estate of which I didn't bother looking at the Corolla as much as I like them because of the CVT

I have driven a pre facelift Corolla Tourer 2.0 and from what I remember the CVT didn't seem quite as bad as it did in the RAV4 in terms of that really annoying over revving when you just slightly touch the accelerator but yeah, never again, just thinking about it now peaks anxiety

Torque converter in my Mazda 6 is so much nicer and the DSG in the Octavia I test driven before the Mazda was great too
The CVT is the one thing id need to be sure to test out. It isnt something that the corolla owners generally seem to complain about though.

Make sure you get a good run where you can put your foot to the floor of you think it will annoy you, I made a huge mistake thinking I'd get used to it and it'll be fine but it just annoyed me more and more over time and I just had to take the loss and get rid of it

Really annoying because it's put me off owning anything with a CVT ever again and that limits my options significantly when it comes to Japanese estate cars

It's the same in my wife's 1.8 CHR

Like I say though I don't recall it being as bad in the 2.0 Corolla but it was a couple of years ago now

I like CVTs more than some other autos I've tried, which often feel like they are always in the wrong gear. CVT keeps the engine at optimal torque. The feel of them does seem to differ even between cars of the same brand for some reason. Some are smoother than others (I hear the CH-R is quite a bad example).

What exactly is it about them that is so bad? Sorry just saw your previous post, hmm that does sound annoying.

It’s been really interesting reading your posts.

I’m itching to have an automatic car again at some stage and CVTs are considered the most reliable… I even recently bought an Octavia, but couldn’t bring myself to risk the DSG even on that…

Food for thought! Thanks

Probably the most reliable of the modern options. The most reliable ones are the old torque converter boxes though.

Mazda still use torque converter, much prefer it in my 6

The best thing about CVT is when driving lightly in traffic, anything more than that and it's annoying. That's me though, others might wonder what I'm on about, they are popular for a reason.

I think the bottom line is, if you like spirited driving, CVT is probably best to be avoided. If you only want to save as much as possible on fuel and drive as frugal as possible then CVT is great.

I need to try the 2.0 Corolla again at some point and see if my memory is right of it not being as bad but I kind of fancy the Suzuki S Cross 1.4 Booster Jet MHEV which I believe is torque converter too
