tp link with controllable wifi

£300 per month  i'm talking sky 34mb compared to 17mb that I have now .. can't even get 75 in my area ... the control of each device connected to the router sounds the best option to me .. now I have to work out whether the new router is "instead" of the Sky router or if it "replaces" the TP link switch that i use to connect the two desktop PC's to the router via ethernet cable ... I would also like to be "future proof" as much as to say I would like to cover my options if fibre was going to be close or a viable option

The cheapest and easiest way you are going to achieve what you want is @crinkleshoes advice of turning off the wireless on your Sky and then adding a wireless access point and set the rate limiting there. But do it with @bremen1874 's suggestion of a Ubiquiti Unifi AC-Lite which is cheaper. As an aside you'll probably get slightly better wireless signal coverage as well, not that it sounds like that is an issue for you.

The kit will be still useful if you switch to fibre and you can just leave your wired switch and devices alone.

got it, so the device would sit alongside and connected to the sky router via ethernet cable with the sky router wifi turned off. I can also see that I can control via PC (which may be switched off) or via an app .. so I have full/preferential control over wifi at all times .. great :-)

to control bandwidth etc ..
I'll try again...

What software are you trying to configure?

You've received various suggestions on how you might achieve what you want, but haven't actually stated what you've decided to do and what if anything you've purchased.

And FWIW I still believe your best first step would be upgrading to fibre if it's available.

Yes, second that... upgrade to FTTC/VDSL first if it's available.

(be careful using "fibre" to name a connection - that's what you call a connection that actually brings fibre into your home... aka FTTP/FTTH/Leased Line)

no no you got me wrong .. I was browsing the net looking at the control software/app for the Ubiquiti Unifi .. no haven't bought anything yet. I did check with Sky and they still only have 34mb fibre in my area .. so depending on the cost of fibre, you think I should go the fibre path instead of controlling bandwidth within the house ??

You're suffering from a lack of bandwidth.

A fibre connection (every ISP calls their FTTC products 'fibre' so get over it) will give you more bandwidth and there's a fair chance that it could solve you problems. It will also give everyone in the household a better internet connection all of the time.

The "get over it" comment was directed at me... their mis-advertisement infuriates me because so many people believe they are actually getting fibre into their homes when they're not.

Usually FTTC is the same price or cheaper than the ADSL2+ connection you have at the moment... so it's a no-brainer to switch to FTTC. Sky are doing it for £20/month including line rental for the first 18 months and then £29/month after that... I imagine £20/month including line rental is cheaper than your current connection.

That will help, but depending on what other people in your home are doing (like torrenting or streaming video) you may want to do rate limiting as well... 34mbit is only 2 people watching 1080p video at the same time.

I haven't done rate limiting on Ubiquiti... from what I've read about it, it doesn't function properly. But that may have only been certain use cases.

that's my problem. If the wife and daughter are using facebook or streaming (whatever they do) .. it seems to preferentially divert network resources to their phones/ipad .. I've looked at the usage rate when it happens and I'm successfully cut out of the network and my PC is hardwired. All this from the Sky router/hub (sr102 i believe), that I cannot control. Hence the need to limit resources to what is fair at the time. If increasing speed/data (via fibre) will solve all our problems without adding anything to the network then all well and good .. I wonder if I will have the same problem with it even if i upgrade to fibre/34mb?

Rate limiting not working ... hmmm that is really what I want it for. Not to speed up wifi but to limit how much of the resources are going to it. Why does the Sky hub give preferential resources to the wifi side of things? Is it because of the second HD box that is fed via wifi?

It was aimed at crinkleshoes, and I really should have resisted. Sorry.

A HD stream from Netflix requires 5Mbps (according to them) not 17Mbps

Rate limiting on the UniFi APs appears to work. I tried it for the first time last-night to see.

It's unlikely that the wireless would have priority over the wired connections. You're most likely just trying to perform tasks that are more sensitive to the limited bandwidth.

I have trouble getting a page to load in google .. let alone trying to game .. they can have fast access via wifi but the ethernet connection slows drastically .. it's the same with the second hub we got (first one died) .. i can test connection speed and it's fine but as soon as one of them logs in to the network .. down it goes ..

I need a moment to myself :-) that is exactly what i need ... if i do get fibre and I look at what the ladies of the house use now and limit then to that, there should be enough bandwidth left over to do whatever I like surely ..
