Having a hard time deciding on a possible future track toy base ...
It's between two brands and cars I really love, hence the difficulty

A Celica GT4 (ST185 to be precise) or a Classic Impreza STi (ideally a V3 or V5 Type-R if I'm willing to spend more)

The Impreza is the lighter car, more bits available ... but the GT4 is a GT4.

So, what are people's opinions? I'm not looking for alternatives ... it has to be one of these two, just not sure which :)

neither of them are good track cars, the entire point of both is to be as quick as possible on **** road services, and grip rather than handle :s but nevermind

I disagree, both can be made to handle despite their limitations - and both are also lots of fun.
I might not be picking the best weapon for the job, but I'm picking one of the two cars I simply really like.

EDIT: To add, both have decent club sprint series you can do

And before anyone mentions this .... Yes the Evo is the better car, but for some reason while I love Evos I just would not want to own one.

Services? not surfaces?

Agree with Tom neither are going to be the best fun on a track, ideally something RWD only for the most exploitable fun on track.

If I were going to build a track toy it would have to be cheap to buy, cheap to prep and cheap to run.

An E30 325i would be top of the list. Both cars mentioned above are 4WD and turbo. Both will cost £££ to mod properly and £££ when they break. An old RWD BMW will give you plenty to keep you occupied.

so true about the e30

stick a 2.8 ally block lump in there on mega squirt and youll have something that will pee all over a gt4/impreza and you wont have to wear a backwards baseball cap when you drive it

I sense you don't really want a track car, you want a quickish car that you like from one of two brands that occasionally you can take on track. That's fine, but I think if your aim is for a track car that you use regular on the track there are perhaps better suited cars that will be more suited such as an Elise or even an MX5 with some boosters if power is your concern.

how much are you gonna spend on a e30 beemer to 'pee all over' a classic sti round a track ?, I'd guess quite a lot

one is a luxo barge, one is a rally $%^& turbo nutter ...why buy chalk and try turning to cheese if you can buy cheese off the shelf ;)

As already said, do you want a track car, something that will get shunted a couple of times, have some run ins with tyre walls and be very raw

Or do you want a fast road car that you can occasionally blast around a track for some fun

I spend £2500 building a Rover Coupe that stuck to the tail of a P1 at Combe. Like anything its all subjective and really relies of driver commitment rather than skill. ie. i didnt care if i trashed the Rover.

Theres always a big overestimation of a stockish scooby capability on tracks though, 0-60 here means nothing.

I'd wager an E30 with engine change would do very well against an Impreza, i'd also wager it wouldn't cost that much to do, about the purchase price or the impreza infact and will cause less hassle and be cheaper to run to boot.

Finding a cheap solid E30 could be an issue :(

here are the rough costs of the one a friend of mine has built
car £500
engine £300
all the fiddly bits to do the conversion £400-£500
then the usual money sorting out suspension, brakes, wheels, tyres

with an m50 manifold etc his is c.230bhp, he is going to megasquirt it too

ive seen it demolish a 240bhp PPP mk1 impreza. imprezas are a bit of a one (or two) trick pony imo. the BM is an absolute hoot to drive, imprezas (with normal power levels) arnt

edit: his owed him under £2k until he decided to go for mega squirt

Not really much of a BMW person though that's the thing, love Toyotas and Subarus really - so want something from one of their stables - and don't really fancy a Supra or MR2.
