Trading the stockmarket (NO Referrals)

Everyone saying they had some good results today.
That's surprising, all I've seen is a sea of red. :o

Woke up to this this morning.

General retrace on the FTSE today it seems, everything was red.

I figured why.
What surprised me was talk of "good day" in this thread.
I'm wondering where, as I've not seen it.

BARC is the ONLY green on my whole list today.

Oh and AME.

Basic materials probably where it's at.

precious metal mines, mining equipment, oil drillers etc.

Might look into them. Had a look at CNR a few days ago as everyone was raving about it on here and it was doing crap... :o

Took a £2k punt today with Rolls Royce (RR.L). Will see how it goes! ;)

im after a bit of advice.

I am about to recieve some compensastion money for unfair dismisal. Its not a lot but i want to invest 1k of if in shares. Probably longterm.

The kicker to this is i have just today started a Module in Uni about the basics of the stock markets ect.. I have sold shares before so im ok with the brockers ect,,

Im just interested in peoples resources and research methods? and any advice for a decent starter investment for this money

Someone at work has started giving me the weekly Investor mag...might be worth picking one up and checking it out. :)

There are various books available, search this thread for a decent list.

I also subscribe to MoneyWeek. It's quite good. I used to by Investor's Chronicle, but I don't really like it and would avoid TBH.

The point is to find a share before it takes off. You could have had CNR for under 1.5p a few months back. I've no idea why people bother investing into a share when it has already taken off unless they want to day trade on the retrace.

Buy into a share that is expecting good news. Look for a few days on how it is performing and decide on your entry point. Don't just buy into at anytime of the day because you want shares in the company. That is a great way to be in the red from day one.

Yeah I know hence why I was asking before. Rolls Royce just got a major contract so hopefully it will go up.

Is everyone getting something in HER or am I to late? :(

"advice" should be qualified, anything else is just tips. Some will be genuine, but most will be self-serving ramps. Try the Questor column in the Telegraph, or FT Alphaville for commentary. The iii forums can be good if you can stomach / filter out the petty crap...

Which stocks you look at will depend on your appetite for risk. If you simply want to beat the High Street savings rate, and keep relatively low risk, then look at something with a decent dividend. OTOH if you're prepared to lose part/all of your investment in the hope of doubling it (or more!) if things go well, then that's an entirely different area.

Never gamble/invest what you can't afford to lose, but understand that it'll take a number of years to double your money with the safer plays.

Stay away from leverage until you're more familiar. Leverage will compound your wins, and your losses. The inexperienced are more likely to make mistakes.

I'm short on LLOY, and long on RKH. I'm watching the likes of BP, PFC, POG, ARG, and XEL.

Good luck. :)
