So, if i invest £500, i lose money if the share price goes past a certain limit...? Bit confused about the "losing money" part...always the bit people need to know and understand. :o

Hmm?

First off you don't win or lose money unless you sell. You buy a number of shares, say 100 shares at 100p each. Say the share price rises to 200p over time and you sell, you would have £200 (minus fees etc). Lower value shares will increase/decrease by a much larger % so are risky but can give big rewards.

Oh it's as simple as that? So i am right in thinking if i have £100 worth of shares and they drop by 10%, if i sold, i would have lost £10 as i would have sold them for £90?

Why did i think it was more complicated... :p

Well if you buy £500 worth of shares, if they go up to £600 you've made 100, if they go down to £400, you've lost 100, you don't actually pay anything, it's just what you have paid for already is worth less.

You buy a certain number of shares for that £500 (depending on the price of 1 share of the stock you wish to purchase) then the share price will rise or fall and you "make or lose money" that way.

I'd suggest reading up a bit or using a fake account to start with as to be completely honest with you.. if you don't understand that bit you've got a way to go to safely be able to risk £500.. unless you're loaded of course in which case go for it ;)

Yep :) If they drop further to say £80 worth you could always go back in, if you think it may rise again.

I don't even have £500 to invest right now. :p

I am reading up on it in my spare time. I actually bought "Investing in Shares for Dummies" , very interesting and helpful. :)

Plus some trading costs that most (if not all) stock brokers will charge, sometimes one for the buy and one for the sell.. the average being around £10 so you've invested £100, lost £10 of your investment but also spent £20 to make your loss hehe :)

You probably already know this but yes you can lose money in the same way a work colleague/mate of mine did.

He had £7k worth of shares in Northern Rock, which wasn't expected to literally go bust and he didn't sell them before this and basically lost it all. :(

Trick is to put your money where your mouth is. And I don't recommend investing in banks. :o :p

I've got the Shareprice app, but I'm new to the iPhone. How are you posting 'screenshots'?

Is there a RNS alert app recognised as being the best?

I've just opened my share account through barclays. Only looking to invest £1k at the moment. Keeping my eye on IQE, KEA and Desire in the morning.

How do you guys pick which ones to go for?

I mean, there are hundreds of companies in lots of different markets...do you stick to a specific sector (banks? oil? etc) and then do a bit of scouting...or just browse and see what you can find? Do you invest in things you have an interest in?

Hello, Basically I have a 3 figure sum that is sitting in the bank doing well...very little. I almost completely understand how the whole losing/gaining money works and am interested in how you guys got into stockmarket trading? What companies did you use, where did you research etc.

Thanks.
