I teach foreigners, and on Friday I've said that we can have a picnic where everyone brings in a dish from their country. Does anyone have any ideas what I can do?

I can cook it in the morning, but there aren't any cooking facilities at my school but I do have access to a fridge.

I'd like it to be quite easy, cheap (I have 9 people that'll be trying it) and travels well.

The only thing that really sprung to mind was a trifle. We learnt the word in class, and none of them have had one before. Any other ideas?

Pasty are super easy to make as are scotch eggs.

Bit more complicated is pork or similar pies.

And of course we're known for our cakes and sandwiches.

Good call AH (still can't get used to the new name, call me old fashioned. :D).

Given that you can't cook, a traditional afternoon tea type affair would work well. Sandwiches with crusts cut off, little cakes and a good old fashioned leaf tea cuppa.

Spnge fingers broke up, sherry soaked on, jelly with berries in, whipped cream on top decarated with brries / fruit for the trifle.

As for english dish not sure beyond sandwhich's with cucimber in. Sorry.

On a srerious note maybe nice sandwiches / mini pork pies , sausage rolls, picknic food.

Gotta be pasties/ pies/ scones nothing else travels will to be honest.

Unless you can bring some cooking gear down there and cook something from fresh?

Oh man, you could make brawn and serve it on rye bread?
Or jellied eels?

As a polish guy i can say i like all of so called english food.

Pork pies and Rolls. I dont think they sell that crap outside of uk. And i know they are crap cos i used to work in Pork Pies factory :D

Fish&chips -> Good stuff i like. Makes you grow sidewise in to time :D

Battered Sausage -> Not only its uk specific sausage but its deep fried. And not bad.

Full English -> All good there even tho it floats in oil :D Beans + black pudding + some bacon (**** loads of it) Sausages + egs + tomatoes + mushrooms . Love that stuff

Sandwich with crisps -> Never would have figure that one out myself. Good stuff

I dont think anything else i ate could be called Traditional British :P

After removing the bacon from fryimg pan, put bread in and fry it in the bacon fat, hash brown as well then your english will be full ;)

E:didn't notice it was british, how about deep fried pizza slices? thays what i tried when in edinburgh last.

Don't forget all the traditional Scottish dishes: Haggis, smoked salmon, venison, smoked duck, grouse, Aberdeen Angus roast, scallops, smoked haddock/Arbroath smokies, cullen skink, black pudding, Cranachan with fresh tayside berries, crumpets, oatcakes with section of scottish cheese.

This stuff is what I mostly cook for foreigners! Always goes down well and makes sure they appreciate Scottish cuisine and dispels the myths.

Whenever i have some one foreign visit me i take them for an India - imo its the best food in Britain and im fairly sure a lot of it has British origins. Its the only thing i miss whilst spending long periods abroad!

cucumber and salt sandwich's with the crusts off',roast beef and mustard saandwich's

bread pudding and cold custard or hot custard in a flask, maybe spotted dick.

Some good ideas here. However, I think that I'm going to go with my first choice of trifle. It travels well, I can make it tonight and it's cheap!

I might pick up a bit of Stilton as well, as it's delicious!
