This is not a political thread but it touches on animal welfare and the rights of folk to pursue legal avenues of riding to horse across the countryside. If it is made political it will disappear to the realms of SC, it would be nice to discuss it here in a civilised manner.

Personally I believe that there is a sound purpose in the keeping of stables and even packs of hounds to carry out the energetic sport of riding in trail hunting. There are also Gymkana and point to point meetings so a full calendar of events are often held. It adds to the colour if the countryside in autumn and winter.

Fox hunting is rightly banned however there are arguments being made that trail hunting, laying an artificial scent for hounds to follow should be banned also. In my opinion it should not.

The same thing probably with any large dog disturbing a wild animal. Accidental encounters will always happen and cannot really be avoided.

Always a lot of drama around it my way at this time of year - last year it came to blows and cars being crashed into each other. I can see both sides of it on Facebook and there is a huge amount of exaggeration, misinformation and people trying to aggravate the situation on both sides.

Isn't one usually disguised to enaqble the hunting of actual foxes...

oh the fox just came across our path and the dogs did what dogs do (insert push laugh here).

If it were something poor people did it would be banned a long time ago and we all know it.

Poor people did kill foxes by shooting to preserve their roosts and flocks. My grandparents did such with a shotgun at night, poor people trap and kill rabbits and hare by netting. Riding to hounds is a rich man or upper middle class preserve and is largely not to kill foxes, barrows are not dug open nowadays although some foxes and other animals do die as a result.

"We are committed to a ban on trail hunting, which is being exploited as a smokescreen to cruelly kill foxes and hares", a Defra spokesperson added.

Since the beginning of August, there were 186 reports of foxes pursued by hunts and 220 relating to suspected illegal hunting incidents, according to the League Against Cruel Sports...''

Hare coursing was banned by the same laws as fox hunting. The rural working classes and the aristocracy are often far more aligned on country sports than divided even if they enjoy different sports. It's generally no nothing urban middle class snobs that have biggest beef.

Trail hunting is a smokescreen for fox hunting.

Anyone can view the footage hunt sabs get online of them chasing foxes, I also saw a video recently of some cretin literally executing fox hounds.

Then theres this....

Was going to post this.

Trail hunting is there to disguise real hunting and provide legal grounds for a defendants when accused of being on a hunt when they chase and kill animals.

This was being taught and uncovered and whilst it’s illegal to encourage it or organise it as a tactic, as long as you don’t admit you are doing it, the loophole stands and you can’t be prosecuted.

Labour said they would fix this if elected and I am glad they are going to do so.

A friend of mine gets paid to cull foxes at certain times of the year now, I have no problem with animals being killed for protection of livestock or to eat or any justifiable necessary reason, but to kill animals purely for fun makes you a scumbag, no matter what class you are.

Thankfully most of the farmers I know round here don't let the hunt on our lands anyway.

And as others are saying, trail hunting is just a smokescreen and to say "oh, some foxes might die accidentally" reminds me of

When I used to do pest control there was definitely some fun involved but that was from the skills used. The actual kill was never anything more than a job.
Local places I used to do shoot on went soft because the public found out.
Now on the very same Facebook page they're all complaining because the rabbits are digging everywhere and the cemetery looks a mess. You just can't win.

I have zero issues with pest and predator control. We live in a rural area and keep chickens so rats and foxes are daily visitors. I’ve also had to do the kind thing for more than my fair share of injured animals.

Ripping an animal apart having stressed it to the point of exhaustion in the name of sport is disgusting, end of. Plenty of opportunities to dick around on horses without that being part of it.
