Trail hunting

Fox hunting or running around with dogs that will find and kill a fox require a good ban, same as grouse shooting.

Grouse shooting does nothing but end in lots of baren areas with very little bio diversity for the entertainment of the rich.

This is not a political thread but it touches on animal welfare and the rights of folk to pursue legal avenues of riding to horse across the countryside. If it is made political it will disappear to the realms of SC, it would be nice to discuss it here in a civilised manner.

Personally I believe that there is a sound purpose in the keeping of stables and even packs of hounds to carry out the energetic sport of riding in trail hunting. There are also Gymkana and point to point meetings so a full calendar of events are often held. It adds to the colour if the countryside in autumn and winter.

Fox hunting is rightly banned however there are arguments being made that trail hunting, laying an artificial scent for hounds to follow should be banned also. In my opinion it should not.
Hmmm…….interesting.

What are the arguments for the ban?

I’m a country gal myself who is partial to a good hack on an old nag from time to time and I agree with the point you make. The potential knock on effects are never thought through but what would any of our political class know about country life?

What difference would banning hunting make to you riding your horse? It’s not like the entire horse economy is built on hunting.

Hunting does put money into horse economy.

I don’t support hunting animals with hounds but banning trail hunting because a few are using it as a smokescreen for hunting illegally is, IMO, poorly thought through.

It will certainly hit farriers and tack providers just to name a couple of things.

Perhaps in time these hunting dogs can be domesticated and added to the homes of those living in terraced houses, that spend all day howling and barking because they are working dogs.

I grew up in the country and was brought up on fresh games, but now accept that I'd rather see animals left alone.

What are the benefits you’re referring to?

Try thinking about the victims instead perhaps?

They are domesticated, hunt sabs often have good interactions with dogs that are being used for hunting.

Thiis is a common sight in the village as the hounds are out being exercised often , tbh seeing a farmers trailer crammed with cows for a one way trip bothers me much more , maybe its having neighbours with chickens and knowing what a fox does to them , not condoning it but just been honest ,its emotionally draining being vegan and also gets you suspended quite often :)

Instinctively my answer is no.

But I think the situation needs to be officially looked into. Because at the moment they are relying on activist groups to supply information, when it is in their interest to make the worst case possible.

If an official report confirms the finding that live foxes are getting caught up in these hunts then I'd advocate a ban.

Even on the best hunt sabs information it is probably a lot less than those flattened by cars. I often see foxes in our road at night, they are a very successful species will kill for fun, wiping out a hen coop leaving dead hens behind but will also scavenge from bins and eat carrion too.

Whats that got to do with anything?

Its the killing of an animal for fun that people object to, accidental deaths of animals and people on the roads is just a fact of life.

Also, this is where hunt advocates try and have their cake and eat it by simultaneously claiming that even on a hunt "the fox mostly gets away" and "not that many are caught" but also "it's another method of culling for population control"

I never said it didn’t, but ultimately farriers will go the way of dry stone wallers etc where a once essential profession is now done by a handful of specialists. It’s just the reality of things where horses have little purpose beyond pleasure in modern society.

I've just asked here (we have a DIY livery) there are loads of farriers in an hour radius from our place. The vast majority of their work comes from people who own their own horses and have them at a livery like ours, nothing to do with the hunt clubs.

If the intention is not to kill foxes then that removes the objection. I personally in fifty years of driving have killed one badger and at least several pigeons, not on purpose obviously and I am regretful when it happens. I am one of twenty million or so who drive and am probably not unique so the byblow of all these facts of life on our roads is just that. Far exceeding the byblow from a hundred or two reported incidents during trail hunts, in fact probably exceeding the toll from before full scale fox hunting was banned. I am sure our wildlife if asked would not have a preference, car or dog.
