Transfer speed of External backup (firewire)

Hi chaps,

Just bought a Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus (250GB) and have it connected to the onboard firewire on my mobo. It is transferring files at 19-21mb/sec - is this a good speed?

It depends on the size of the files. A single 1Gb file will transfer far faster than 1Gb of 100Kb files because only one write to the MFT is required.

For a mixed load of files 20MB/s is about right.

The files were between 100MB and 200MB big. Just wanted to check it was working OK. ta
