Transferring data between two computers.

Did a quick google and it seems more hassle than I'd hoped . Basically I have some 720p .mkv files on my main rig and want to transfer them to a htpc. Are there any easier options?

do you have a hub on your modem with your broadband

if so, plug them both in to it with Ethernet cable

I have a Linksys router, so I just hook them both up to it via ethernet cables?

PS. When I said "more hassle than I'd hoped" I was referring to making an ethernet crossover cable.

Thanks for your help btw.

Hook em up to the switch in the router, share the files on PC1, access PC1 from PC2 via its IP address to see the shared files, copy, paste, enjoy video files.

in more detail

1) plug them both in
2) go on the pc with the data, , Right click on the folder that it is in... sharing... and share the folder
3) go to the other pc, and look for network nieghbourhood
the other pc shared drive should appear in there

copy and paste

connect 2 pcs via ethernet, you wont need a monitor, just a power cable.

If not

USB stick, external HD would do the trick.

Got a similar problem. I have a hub and connected both pc to hub via ethernet. Main pc is windows 7 and second pc is xp. I want to access files on second pc. I shared the folders I wanted and went on main pc but have no clue how to see those folders/files?

on the second pc open the command prompt type in ipconfig and note down the IP address, then on the main PC open Computer and type in \\IP address of other PC into the address bar.

You might need to modify your firewall policies/disable them on a temp basis.

Did that on second pc but on the command prompt it says 'windows configuration' and that's it. No ip address.

Nothing on either pc.:(

you might need to make sure both pcs are on the same workgroup name

you can change the network name by right clicking on "my computer" properties

change settings (win7) or system name (xp)

and make sure the workgroup name is the same on both pcs

might have to set the IP's manually on the hub setup, if its actually a hub and not part o f a router network.

@op: you dont need to make a cross over cable, almost all NIC's of the last several (eg more than 3) years can use a standard cable and be connected to each other and they will auto negotiate it for you, they dont even need proper IP's, the windows failover ones will work fine.

Unplug the hard drive with the data on, plug it into the htpc. Turn on the htpc, copy the data across. Definitely fastest.

Networking the two together takes about a minute if you know what you're doing, possibly a lot longer if you don't. Actually transferring many gigabytes over the network will take ages though. Its good for keeping the two synchronised, but not so good for moving loads of data once.

He doesn't say they're both gigabit, so it seems a fair guess that at least one wont be. I'm fairly sure connecting the drive directly would still be quicker than gigabit too.

id have said its fair to asume they were Gbit, seeng as only the chepaest of the chepa mobos dont have it, and that was years ago. But if they are old machines, or normal cards its a fair assumption that one is isnt.

My gbit trasnfers at silly speeds, like the speed that my mates drive writes at :)

Thanks to those who tried helping me! I ended up just taking the hard drive from the 2nd pc and putting it on my main and transferred files this way and then put it back. It worked. Job done. :)
