Transferring data from old IDE harddrive HELP

Hi guys, Got a little problem. Basically my mums computer has died (constant bluescreens) I've tried all i can think of to somehow fix it but to no avail. Thing is im not after a fix for the computer but i need help transferring her data from her old IDE harddrive onto a spare netbook SATA2 harddrive or my computers SATA2 hdd.

Is there any way to do this without an adapter? if not any pointers to which cheap adapter will do the trick.. so i can plug her IDE hdd into my mobos SATA2 port and transfer her data.

Any help is much appreciated, Oh the beauty of old gear (PITA!)

Would an IDE Harddrive External Enclosure do the trick and transfer through USB?

If they sold it here i would get it from here but they dont so what you did is ok man. Yeah i saw that adapter. It's looking like either a...

1. IDE to SATA Adapter
2. IDE HDD External Enclosure
3. IDE PCI card

Not sure which would work best but thinking about it, the IDE HDD external enclosure would mean my mum could reuse this IDE HDD as a little backup drive.

I dont see anything you're selling that would help me transfer data off an IDE HDD... better still what exactly mate?

there's a 2 port ide raid pci card in there which would fit the bill assuming it still works. (I've got some ide drives so i'll check before posting if you're interested)

Am I missing something here? Why not just install the HDD into your computer, connect it using an IDE cable to your mobos IDE connector using an IDE cable (probably supplied with your mobo), plug in a four pin molex from your power supply to the HDD and you should be able to access the drive just like any other.

I reckon it could be worth taking a wild stab in the dark here, and assuming that his mobo doesn't have any IDE ports, even though he hasn't explicitly stated as much.

That being the case, I think an USB external enclosure would be the obvious way to go - cheap, easy to get hold of, and would allow the drive to be re-used as a backup device as already mentioned.

Fair enough, I didn't notice that.

So yes, assuming he's still got the hardware in his sig, he could just do what you suggested. It's such an obvious solution though that I wonder why he's asking about adapters and PCI cards if an existing IDE port is practically staring him in the face...

I do too, but I'm thinking there's a slim chance that it's never been used and forgotten about, either that or he's been too lazy to update his sig.

Maybe he has the same issue I have, one IDE slot which is used by his DVD drive

Unplug the DVD drive, plug in the HDD, transfer the data off, plug the DVD drive back in.

Last time I looked you could run two devices off an IDE cable anyway, but yes if they're both in use just remove one device whilst the data is removed from the HDD.

You are absolutely right, i'm such a knob sometimes for some reason i automatically assumed my mobo didn't have an IDE port.. but checking again now you are right i do have one IDE port. DUUUUUH! well yeah problem solved and thanks for the reminder

Think i'll grab that IDE HDD external enclosure too as the harddrive is still OK.

Now mother gets my current PC (minus the GTX570) and i finally get to do my long overdue upgrade
