Transition lenses - are they any good?

All "fashion" means is the ability/need to confirm with the dictates of other people. Which often results in strange, compulsive and downright bizarre behaviours amongst its followers :)

Ie, sheepish behaviour.

Most of us couldn't give a crap about fashion because we can make our own judgement calls.

I wouldn’t begrudge someone their opinion. I suppose it gets easier as you get older as well ie less need to conform. Still, I’m pretty sure my 63 year old father would feel similarly

Just giving my opinion, as I clarified. OP can do whatever he wants, of course.

They just are not fashionable. Often worn with short sleeve shirts as well.

Short sleeve shirt and tie.

I am not a fashionable person, but I wouldn't ever be seen in transitions. Nor am I really vein. But they are the ultimate geek - in a non chic way glasses. Maybe when they actually work well, then yeah sure.

I tend to like Transitions as I hate carrying around a pair of prescription sunglasses in addition to my specs.
The newer ones are I believe much faster at reacting to light than the old ones.

For me they work, and to be honest I don't particularly care what my glasses look like as long as they do their job:) although that might be in part because usually when I go to try out new glasses it can take me trying on a couple of dozen frames before finding one that is reasonably comfortable (I wish they'd sort them by head width of something:p)

They're glasses that get dark in the sun. About as geeky as a ball point pen, or a roll of loo paper.

Sheesh if you think glasses are geeky your mind must be really blown by a smartphone, eh.

And they do work. They get dark when it's bright and transparent when it's not.

I honestly can't believe how vain you lot are (yes you are).

During the formals photos in a wedding, ideally you take off your sunglasses, regular glasses are fine but you want the person's eyes to be seen. Every now and again there will be someone with transition lenses and I would ask them to take it off, the first reaction you can see on their face is "WTF? why?", it's like they had forgotten totally what they are wearing, and when they realises, they go "oh, yes sorry."

Oh yes indeed.

Wtf are you guys on about? I don't need to wear glasses but I've never looked at someone wearing transision ones and thought 'oh my, how unfashionable'. Weird.

They don't just get dark in the sun though, they also get dark inside too. Or everyone I've seen wear them, they do.

They aren't asthetically pleasing, to me and I'd never wear a pair. (I do wear glasses too).

I think they're brilliant. Miles better than having to carry around prescription sunglasses. Can be a bit annoying if you're sat in a beer garden then go inside to get a pint, but its a trade off I'll happily take.

They also are not 100% dark, I want my sunglasses to be dark enough people can't see my eyes, better still like a mirror. Transition lenses doesn't do that. It constantly sits between the 2, it's like 10% grey to about 70% grey. I personally rather have totally clear and totally dark.

I've never seen them go dark inside, and never had that happen to me - they iirc respond to the UV component in daylight (UVC from memory), which you don't get from normal artificial lighting (you need "black lights" of the UV sterilising lights) for it to respond.
What you can have is someone who has just come in from bright daylight and whose glasses are in the process of adjusting back to normal.

You're probably thinking of UVA (this is most likely) or UVB. Life on Earth would have a lot of problems existing if UVC could get through!
