Also thanks to sunlitsix for posting this or I would never have found it, I love SSAA! :D

 i knew it would make 6 series owners happy :D

that was a nice comparisoon you did there, did you use the built in time demo for the tests?

The fps were taken from the exact same place I took the screenshots but without being zoomed in on the fence. I didn't know there was a built in time demo but I’ll check that out now and the results should be similar.

haven't got css :p. Haven’t got the option you mentioned in lost coast either  are there different versions of lost coast? i did a search for any demo files and it came up empty, so is there anywhere to download a timedemo for lost coast?

Edit: Realised I'd accidently put AA off in nVidia control panel. Done it again with proper settings. Changes below.

Just installed this and ran the Lost Coast stress test.

Setup:

AMD64 3000+
6600GT
1GB

All at stock.

Game settings:

Resolution - 1280x960
Model detail - High
Texture detail - High
Shader detail - High
Water detail - Reflect world
Shadow detail - High
HDR - Full

Results:

AA - 2x
AF - 8x
SSAA Off - 33.16
SSAA On - 32.40

AA - 4x
AF - 8x
SSAA Off - 24.75
SSAA On - 26.01

For some reason when I put AA upto 4x on the stress test I had a weird purple lighting effect on all the sand and windows. But didn't show with supersampling. Seem to be getting some strange results.

Didn't have HL2 installed so I used Lost Coast, going to load up HL2 EP1 now and see what it's like on that and see if there's any difference.

wonder if the SSAA is done via software or the GPU itself is doing the work.

Test Settings

A64 3000+ at 2.6Ghz
1Gb ram
7600GT at 720/1750

Game Settings:
Resolution - 1280x1024
Model Detail - High
Texture Detail - High
Shader Detail - High
Water Detail - Reflect All
Shadow Detail - High
FSAA - 2x / 4x
FSAF - 8x throughout
vsync - Disabled
HDR - Full

Results

graphbw2.jpg

2xAA w/o SSAA = 82fps
2xAA with SSAA = 84fps

4xAA w/o SSAA = 80fps
4xAA with SSAA = 78fps

best performance is at 2xAA with SSAA, which has similar IQ with 4xAA w/o SSAA

Screenshots are pretty close to the fence, would I see better results standing furter away?
Nah, it's perfect there. You can see the effect on the fence perfectly and your FPS isn't unnaturally higher due to being too close, having it zoomed out a bit and with characters on screen makes it a more realistic benchmark.

It's good to see there is absolutely no performance hit worth mentioning even on your 6600GT though.

a little update, they are now looking at ways of getting this to work in other driver sets :)

wonder if nvidia were actually ment to reveal this in the driver set? and if they will continue to allow it to work on the 6 series in future driver sets...

A good Transparancy AA effect to look out for in COD2 is to look at any of the camouflaged tarpaulin that covers any gun emplacements.

Get under the tarp & look up towards the sky. It's best if you've got a sky box with the sun shining. You can see the clouds & sun through the tarp.

Subtle but impressive!
