Transporting an Engine

Hi all,

Got a good deal possibly on mondeo engine to scavenge for bits, but I have absolutely no idea how i'd pick it up. Presumably it would be too heavy to just chuck in the boot - or even on the back seats? (Currently drive a mk2 mondy). Are there any courier options?

Just put it in the boot

2 of us to put it in, 2 of us to lift it out.

That's an 8v Peugeot XU engine in a Mondeo 2 hatchback boot.
 
As long as the engine is drained (so you can lay it on its side) it should be fine? Bit harder to get it out but it shouldn't be impossible.

Or you could hire a van?

Some couriers will not take engines on pallets any more because the sharp edges bash into other freight and damage it. I'd personally never ship any valuable engine on a pallet, I'd rather go get it myself.
 
Phone up gullible mate (me) and ask him for a lift home in his Fiesta.


Not mentioning that you have got a cortina engine that needs a lift as well ......

You could unbolt/take out the passenger seat, and put the engine there.
Its much easier than putting it into the boot.
 
Yea, you can just rest it on an old tyre or simlar, tends to fit the sump quite well and stop it moving about too much. Obviously you have to strap it down a bit, preferably :)

Indeed. Many a time I have thought cupboards etc would easily fit in the saloon and have failed.

I have the saloon and V6 at either end of my car - wouldn't like to try it either! A flat/inline engine might be OK, but even the 60 degree V would probably be too much.
 
Pretty much did what lopez did, stuck it on the back seats. Mine had a gearbox attached at the same time.

Id put some wood or a sheet underneath, something that will make it easier to get out, mine stuck to the boot carpet and was really awkward to remove.

Also, make sure your tyre doesnt blow out on the motorway like mine did when i had the engine in the back, brown pants time!
 
Got my bottom end home with folded down seats and put it on a big seedtray. Also wrapped it in a duvet through last minute mad thoughts of it knocking around and lashed it with ropes only to realise when I got home that the engine wasn't free of oil so a nicely ruined duvet didn't really impress the parents much:(.
