Hi All,

The trailer gives away the typical M.Night Shyamalan twist very early (it has a generic "daddy/daughter at a concert which 'might' be attacked shortly" vibe at first, but oh boy its not!) so I'm not sure if the end will have one (hopefully not), but from the trailer this looks to be a decent-ish thriller, and an interesting role for Hartnett. So why did I add that this is a new "nepo-baby" film, well the concert the main cast are at is one performed by actual singer Saleka Shyamalan, who is N.Nights daughter! I'm not into the R&B scene so I've no idea how talented she is so it might be unfair (or not) to call her a nepo-baby TBH.

Anyway -

Synopsis said:
Warner Bros. Pictures presents a new experience in the world of M. Night Shayamalan—“Trap” —featuring performances by rising music star Saleka Shyamalan.

A father and teen daughter attend a pop concert, where they realize they’re at the center of a dark and sinister event.

Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, “Trap” stars Josh Hartnett, Ariel Donoghue, Saleka Shyamalan, Hayley Mills and Allison Pill. The film is produced by Ashwin Rajan, Marc Bienstock and M. Night Shyamalan. The executive producer is Steven Schneider.

Shyamalan? Hard pass.

The concept could be good.. but he's not got a good record.

I think it looks better than Alien Rombus in the cinema trailers but it does give you the expected complete film (which is very predictable) now .. it could be good if the acting+directing is first rate.

The initial press screenings are getting OK reviews, kind of "he's back............its decent..................Harknett is great" etc etc.

However, as with almost all "press" screenings i.e. not movie critics specifically, they tend to be more glowing than critic reviews or audience ones.

They always seem to be memorable… whether good, bad or just weird!

I’m not really sure where they can go with it after so much is given away in the trailer but maybe something to see on a quiet weekend.

The guardian reviewer wasn't pulling any punches:

What’s most egregious about Trap is how Shyamalan uses it all as a backdoor showcase for his daughter Saleka, who plays the megastar on stage, singing her original music and, in the jaw-droppingly terrible last act, becoming one of the film’s key characters. Just months after he tried to force his other daughter, Ishana, into the spotlight, by producing her loathed horror film The Watchers, he’s now insisting Saleka breaks out – an equally unlikely ascent given the evidence. While her music is just about believable, if a little dated, for a star of her stature, as an actor, she’s an uncomfortable distraction, similar to the don’t-quit-the-day-job level nepo-catastrophe that saw Sofia Coppola start and end her acting career in The Godfather III. (In Trap, the cameo-obsessed director’s cameo is playing his daughter’s uncle, whose one scene has him telling us how incredibly kind and incredibly talented she is.)

Seems like it would be a good premise for a twist but the Trailer gives it away. It should have started out as a dad trying to protect his daughter and get out of the place and then the bait and switch.

Exactly and not give it all the way in the trailer. They could have made it so there no indication at all in the first half the movie ie Dusk till Dawn approach.

Will be off to the cinema to see this with Wife and daughter next week, they’re keen to see it, so if it suck’s I can blame them :)
