I was doing a new install og WHS using the x-files edition which comes with a free version of a partition resizing tool. Unfortuantley, this bombed out with an error and now I cant install WHS (unexpected file system error). I tried using recovery console of an XP disk and fix mbr to see if it made any difference, no luck. Installing XP as a test didn't work either, error when copying files, even after doing a full format.

Does anyone know of any good software I can use to repair the drive and get it back to a usable state?
Its an old 120Gb Deskstar IDE drive.

Cheers

Download WD DLG diagnostics from western digital website, a good utility to diagnose hard drives.

First thing I did - passed all tests

deathstars...

you could try deleting the partitions use parted magic http://partedmagic.com/ then try format and install again?

also try doing a Drive Fitness Test

passed the drive fitness test from the hitachi diagnostics.
Have downloaded partedmagic, can create and format partitions fine using it.
It has a drive testing tool, running pretty much every test I can find, and the only error it has listed is 'bad MFT' Im trying to rebuild the drive boot sector using the testing tool , while I go off and google how to fix a bad MFT, Im presuming it is some file table, but google will help...

It is a master file table, scandisk or norton disk doctor can help. try copying something to the drive, and while copying, go to properties of the drive, then tools and scandisk, check both options, and click scan. because the drive is working, it will ask you to schedule the scan, do it. and then restart the computer. it should scan the drive before booting to windows.
