travel insurance?

doesn't cover all medical expenses though. travel insurance is still advised.
yea but if your pretty much in good health and not going extreme sporting your probably good.

It's a risk though, but how many medical treatments have people had in this country that weren't planned? it's pretty much in my eyes paying for something your 99% not likely to ever use

I always take it but then I like skiing.

For other trips I still take it, after seeing someone getting choppered off a ship to hospital and thinking "blummin hell I hope they have insurance" I pay it just for peace of mind.

Paying for something you're 99% not likely to ever use pretty much describes all insurance. My house is unlikely to burn down but I pay for insurance every year to be covered on the off chance it does.

if it's EU just get https://www.gov.uk/global-health-insurance-card

No idea why it's called "global" though...
Your own link says this isn't a replacement for travel insurance. It doesn't cover all health costs and it never covers repatriation costs. It also doesn't cover things such as:
  • Cancellation/curtailment
  • Missed departure
  • Delay
  • Travel abandonment
  • Baggage
  • Personal liability
  • Cash, travellers cheques etc.
  • Loss of passport

It really annoys me when people become ill or injure themselves abroad, didn't take any travel insurance out. Yet family and friends set up gofundme accounts for people to pay the mid 5 figure sum to take them home. Why should I pay towards someone who forgotten to pay £20-80 for travel insurance?

That's often struck me.

Oh please help our [random relative/friend] who went on an expensive trip to far away land and broke n number of limbs - now they can't afford the gazillion pound medical bill they ran up because they didn't take out insurance.

If they can afford a few grand for a holiday, then they can afford £50-80 for travel insurance.

Lol where you getting 20 quid insurance from? All im seeing for 2 adults and a kid is 200+

I've had Nationwide Flexplus for a few years now. £13/month covers road assistance, phone insurance and travel insurance. If you use at least two of the products, worth it.

Even in the deep end of Covid when i went to Singapore, had to take out insurance for travel + Covid cover, it was like £10. I think the one i paid for Ireland in August was also under £20.

I can get a worldwide annual (minus USA and winter sports) for about £60.

thats a fact, having insurance gives peace of mind but getting insurance is the easy part, claiming on it is where the difficulties start. already seen with few companies i rang i cant get through to anyone so cant risk going with them. might not bother with the insurance this time round,

Before getting unwell I used to get travel insurance for twenty quid for a week.
Then i got diagnosed with cancer. When I was undergoing treatment the average travel insurance quote I got was six hundred pounds for a week in europe. Really simple to get. Just declare the condition and get the insurance. I don't think so. Robbing gits.

Then I tried a company called "insurancewith". Declare the condition then got presented with a form asking 64 questions asking details about it. These I answered as accurately as I could. Which was a real pain in the butt. Worth the effort though. I got a quote for £100. Never claimed on it so I couldn't vouch for them.

That's the issue, going on trust pilot seems a lot of these companies dont pay out or make it very difficult.
Was looking at replacement passport thingy if its stolen and you would have to pay access per person and that doesnt mean insurance send you replacement passports. You still got to go through the emergency travel documents process on gov.uk and 100 quid per person. And when insurance access is 95 quid it makes ya wonder...

Buy better insurance.

Most travel insurance policies cover lost and stolen passports, or at least cover the cost of the replacements.

If you do lose your passport the insurance policy will waive the excess claim fee. This isn’t always the case, so it is worth checking.

Sometimes, travel insurance will cover costs like additional flights or extra nights in a hotel while you wait for your emergency travel document. This can be in place of or as well as the replacement fees – so make sure to read the small print.
