Travelling to Hong Kong

Hi guys, just got back from Macau.

Hong Kong is great (aside from the fact my mate is completely clueless and has done no research and wants to only eat at non Asian places).

Going to festival walk mall later on and then Nathan road and lady street this evening.

Macau was awesome, bungee jump was one of my favourite experiences of my life. Quite funnily we were approached by several prostitutes in Macau asking for a massage lol. Its amazing there were so many in our hotel too just roaming around trying to get guys attention.

Will get an octopus card tomorrow or later today as we're going to big buddha tomorrow morning and will try going by MTR.

Really lovely country we are learning new things everyday, first day was overwhelming but now slowly starting to pick up on things!

Raymond, its bloody humid here lol :p thank god I've got enough clothes for a change daily!

Love the langham place hotel btw its the best hotel I've ever been to hands down

I did tell you to bring a change of clothes....and that was April weather! Lol.

I recall I change and shower twice a day when I'm there because of it.

Haha good thing I did, I'm starting to adapt to it now though!

My friend doesn't seem to like Hong Kong at all he just seems so uninterested in things we have to do and can't remember things like the name of the hotel or where it is. All I constantly get is "where we going next and what time?" And then he forgets once again. Very off putting but gonna try and not let it ruin our trip.

Going to festival walk mall shortly whenever he decides to wake up and get ready and then we'll hit lady market and Nathan road in the evening

Give him a copy of the itinerary then he won't have to ask again :p

Or send him to Stanley, lots of Ex-pat there, Irish Bar & Pizza Express included. lol

I do enjoy HK. I had my wedding at the Intercontintal Hotel (my wife is from HK). Was amazing; great venue, food, views, rooms etc.

Hotel prices were crazy though. Something like $80 for a diet coke. To be fair it came with its own ice bucket.

I had some street food that nearly wiped me out. It was either the milk or ice cubes, but damn, it makes me need the toilet just thinking about it. Here's a pic of when it all went wrong (im on the right, but it wiped us both out)

Raymonds given a pretty decent list of things to do/see. All I'd add is be sensible when sampling the street food.

Oh, and try to visit Macau whilst you're out there. If not for the casino's then for the doggy toilets.

Enjoy your time out there, its a great city!

Btw, I don't think I've told you this El1te. The best view from the Peak is not where you got to pay to go up to the top. Nor to the side by that little gazebo thing.

The best view is about 20 mins walk down the path that goes round the peak, it literally does a circle round the top, you will see lots of people walk and jog up there. If you walk about 20 mins you will see lots of people with cameras/tripods there taking photos.

The second best spot, with less walking is on top of the little shopping mall at the peak. Just take the escalator to the top, and out the door, there is a roof terrace. Actually less people there than the terrace where you have to pay. I have been to them all and that's my take on it.

When you get a table at Bubba Gump, ask if you can sit by the window if possible.

Cheers mate will try get to that top spot.

Langham hotel customer service is just really brilliant. I spoke to the concierge because the local 7/11 didn't sell octopus card but she told me she can give us some and gave us a guide where to go from the mall straight to **** kok mtr. She's also been so useful in writing up places we have been in Chinese for the drivers to understand I'm really amazed and happy how much the staff help you out, quite a complete experience to those in UK hotels.

So yeah got my octopus card topped up with $150 and will head to big Buddha tomorrow morning.

How do you like the Langham Place mall? That long escalator is amazing isn't it?

You been to the Korean BBQ across the street yet?

p.s. random fact, one year, I saw Mischief there once as I was leaving, just outside the Toast Box.

Langham mall is one of my favorites it's absolutely amazing, and yeah the escalator is great :).

Been to the Korean bbq had some bibimbap it was really delicious, also tried green tea latte from Starbucks with the super thin straw, lovely drink! I bought this lemon fizzy drink from 7/11 forgot the name of it but it's a yellow bottle and I absolutely love that.

Will have some dim sum tomorrow at some point. Oh also had mango fiesta from haagen daas which was also amazing.

I love this country lol.

Btw Raymond, is langham mall always crowded? We thought we'd go around 10pm but it was still packed lol

Lol, the super thin straw is for hot drinks! :D

Langham place is pretty much crowded a lot of the time, I would say more so in the evening during the week, Saturday and Sunday is when it's most crowded. If you think it's crowded now, wait until Saturday.

It is also because it has a MTR entrance to the station in the basement, that also increases traffic. And it's one of the better mall in the area. people there loves to shop.

I'm suffering withdrawals reading all this :s Singapore in a few weeks in the hope I can tempt the girlfriend into more trips to Asia, she freaked out in Hong Kong when I last went, bah, must be five years ago now.

I'm sure Raymond knows somewhere better, or if its even still there, but there should be a Japanese restaurant I think near the top of Langham place mall that did a pretty good Ton-Katsu, although a restaurant on Canton Road near Harbour City was better but I can't for the life of me remember its name. Going to Hong Kong and not eating Asian food is a crime!

The green straw is awesome lol.

Yeah with the mtr there it makes sense how it's always packed, honestly though most places in Hong Kong you look around and there's a series of events happening!

There is a Japanese place near the top of Langham Place, I didn't eat there though, there is one place on he 20th floor in some office building that's my favourite, sat on the floor with the whole 9 yards, really authentic. Wish I could remember the name but my cousin took us there at the time.

The other Japanese place I love, but is a chain is Watami. It's soooo good.

When you come back you'll realise how sparse England is.

Remember the try the custard tarts, jerky and pop into Watami for a meal. And city's super for the Japanese snacks.

Where's the best place to get custard tarts and jerky from?

Been chucking it down and it's forecast for rain all day, still gonna try go to the big buddha if my mate bloody wakes up (I told him be ready at 8am it's 7:42 and he's still sleeping -_-).

We weren't able to go to ladies market last night cause of heavy rain and storms but if it's moderate rain tonight we'll go then.

Will probably have to give landmark and Pacific malls a miss now but gotta make Victoria peak, avenue of stars, causeway bay, harbour city and ifc mall the priorities

Just find the nearest bakery, the less chain look alike the better !!!! Best when they are warm just out of the oven.

That is how you say it phonetically for custard tart - "Dan Tat", with no trailing "T" on the tat, but start out saying like tat if that makes sense. So don't say ta as in thanks but say tat as in junk.

I won't try saying the beef jerky...lol

Jerky places are on the street or the MTR stations, there is one at Sha Tin and another at APM. There will be lots more.

I did say when it rains, it pours, it is August after all.

And yes, do the Peak, that is a must !

Got back to London last night, I miss Hong Kong already sigh lol.

What an amazing trip, partly ruined by my mate but thoroughly enjoyed it and I will definitely be going back there.

I'll write up a more detailed overview of the trip later on today/tomorrow if anyone is interested, I've also taken over 500+ photos which I'll upload (excuse some of them I just got really trigger happy).

Once again thanks to everyone who helped and gave me advice on this, especially Raymond! There were a few things I was unable to eat thanks to you know who nicely ruining the timing of things but on my second trip I won't be going with him again that's for sure :P.

If anyone is looking for a hotel recommendation I really cannot fault Langham Place, it's the best hotel I've stayed at. Their staff are super friendly and helpful, the rooms are very nice and have everything you could ever need, not to mention the hotel is attached to Langham Place mall which is also attached to Monk Kok MTR station which made getting around easy.

The Langham Place is incredible. My first 3 trips were spent there. This time however we're doing things a little more budget friendly.

Glad you enjoyed it. You can take Raymond and I next time you go and leave your miserable friend at home. :p
