Long story short. 450 quid +75 if not cash in hand, to avoid Mr tax man, to do work which is described by said surgeon to take no longer than 2 hours......

Is that a joke? 250 quid an hour to chop down 2 bushes and dispose of the mess?

I think I went into the wrong business.:D

This is on par with the 350 quid my mum once paid for a plumber to fit 20cm of copper pipe twist fitting, not a bit of hot work, to replace a busted bit of crap push fit plastic stuff.
That was his emergency rate, and he didn't come until after 5pm when he had finished his normal jobs. Even though he was called at midday. Again it took about ten minutes....

I know its a cool story but these prices/quotes are ludicrous or am I just utterly out of touch?

This is in London .

You don't need a tree surgeon for that.

I charge 300-400 per day to do such jobs. Removing a few bushes should be done by yourself or a handy man type.

sadly tree surgeons dont come cheap, i bought myself a chainsaw and cut down a big willow with it but you have to treat it very carefull the slightest mistake or lack of concentration and your in a whole world of pain

I think you're problem here is you're getting quotes from tree surgeons for a couple of bushes, that's like me asking a heart surgeon to come and fillet my fish (Not quite but you see what I mean).

Probably should phone a gardener next time. Or DIY

Next door will soon be up for sale so I asked owners if we paid can we get tree cut down - They said yes and guy came and had it down -logged in rounds and chaff shreaded by 12.00 -- Grand total of £120 cash - He tidied up and was clean as new pin when he left.

As you can see it almost overhung our greenhouse and dropped so many seeds and stalks it was blocking everything up.

a tree sergeon once told me his liability insurance cost him £20k a year, if theres any thruth in that then that could explain the high price
