Ok, so I just entered my first Tri in 3 years; Brighton Marina in September. I've also discovered a Tri club round the corner from my house. They have limited membership, but I'm trying to get on the waiting list.

You can cut the neck if you want.
The only other tip I have is to avoid swimming in a wetsuit for a few days after having your hair cut if your barber does your neck with a cut throat razor. You don't want to be 750m out and feel like someone is trying to cut your head off.
