trip to amsterdam

There are 2 ways to spend a weekend in amsterdam.

1) Sightseeing weekend (anne frank house, museums, vondel park etc.)

2) A lads weekend (Coffeeshops, bars, clubs, red light district etc.)

Food i found was cheap in amsterdam, some nice cheap takeaways down the RLD just be careful when going down there at night as mugging is a common occurance in that area.

Renting out a bicycle is a great way to travel around the city as the city is ruled by them and a cyclist always seems to have the right of way lol.

Drinks can be quite expensive and try to avoid all the touristy coffeeshops such as Greenhouse and the bulldog.

Enjoy your weekend, i know i did :)

We got told to avoid alley ways.....common sense really. Stay in the same place as the public eye

I never had any issues around the RLD there were always a lot of people around. The people offering you drugs etc would probably even help you if someone did try anything..

Is that meant to be an argument for saying prostitution's not so bad? Serious question.

It's an argument we used when people judged us for going to the RLD :)

Plus if its legal in the country and regulated properly (like it is) then whats the harm?

tbh we werent going to scrimp on stuff i just didnt fancy paying over the odds for transport +accommodation.
what your saying all sounds good tho:)

Thats cool :)

BTW we stayed in a place called the RHO Hotel. It was awesome, great service, not through the roof prices and 10 yards from Dam Square :)

A few of us popped into Amsterdam when on the way back from Hanover(Germany) in November.
Basically, worst place I have ever visited. stayed at a nice hotel called the Hampshire Hotel.( about 46 Euro's each a night) Beer was about 5 Euro/pint.
Dont drive, when I go to Hanover, I am not driving the whole 14hours again :( Traffic around Amsterdam is terrible so best bet is flying.

Well it's a terrible argument :).

I just can't imagine that any of the working girls have actually made the choice* to be in the industry they're in... I'd wager a hefty sum that when they were seven they didn't dream of entertaining a sweaty, hairy, pathetic man in a booth for €50 a time. The thing I object to is how these women are manipulated and exploited (I realise there are "high class escorts" who have quite a nice life, but we're discussing the other end of the "market")... I'd also wager that an awfully high proportion of these prostitutes have either been trafficked, are under the thumb of a pimp or are doing it because they have literally no other option - is preying off such desperation an attractive prospect?

It's only legal because it's the only way to offer some protection to these girls... prostitution's going to happen, so they may as well try and regulate it. Legalisation doesn't mean it's awesome.

*When I talk of "choice" I mean an actual free choice.

Have you ever been? Or infact ever dealt with anyone in that kind of industry?

Some people have a very different way of looking at these things, some of them enjoy the work, yes some of them are pimped out and whatever else but you'd be surprised at the amount of people who do do it through choice. :)

I think if you book with EasyJet at least 6 weeks in advance you can get fares for about £20 - £40 return (plus taxes).

I lived in Amsterdam for 9 years it is a fantastic city and the Dutch are great people. Make sure you always keep your wits about you especially in the red light area. There are a lot of shady street people. The red light is safe if you keep your wits about you but it can be unsafe if you don't. I would never walk around the red light on my own at night (well I would but I wouldn’t recommend it to somebody who is new to Amsterdam). To me the red light has some of the best and cheapest bars. If you feel threatened or unsafe just shout "help police". 80% of Amsterdam police work undercover and the red light is teaming witrh them.

There is a touristy area called the Leidseplein. This to me is a safe area but expensive regarding having a drink. Leidseplein is full of rip off bars like the Bulldog.

Never buy any drugs off the street. At best you will get ripped off at worst you will get poisoned. If you smoke weed and think about trying space cake only eat ONE or HALF a piece. Lots of people eat a piece and don't feel anything then eat another piece. Not long after eating the second piece they feel the effect of the first one starting. If you don’t smoke weed don’t even think about eating space cake as you will deeply regret it. Only buy weed in official coffee shops.

If you are looking for things to do I would recommend things like the Heineken brewery tour, the museums, the Anne Frank tour, Albert Cuyp market, the flea market, the hash museum and the sex museum. Also it may be worth seeing if there any bands on the weekend you go. When I lived there I could often see bands that were pretty big in the UK but not so big in Holland. The Melkweg and Paradiso are quite small venues. I would check out their websites to see if anybody is good on the weekend you go.

If you want a really good time to go I would go for Queen’s day. Arrive 29th April for Queen’s day’s eve. Queen’s day is a big street festival celebrating the Queens birthday. Well her mothers birthday really. The Queens birthday is in October (I think) but as it would be crap weather in October the Queen kept it on her Mothers birthday. The Queens day street festival is excellent. Lots of people from all over Holland come to Amsterdam.

It is up to you obviously but I wouldn’t recommend staying in a hostel or camping. Yes they are cheap but not ideal. I have done the hostels and camping when I first got to Amsterdam but did not enjoy it. Look for a really cheap hotel.

Renting out a bike is a good way to see Amsterdam if you stay off the beer and weed. Bike theft is a big problem in Amsterdam so if you do rent one out always lock it to some sort of railing or bike stand.

I agree. If you look carefully in the red light you will see the women are pimped. The pimps watch their windows and make sure the prostitutes don't rip them off. Most of the prostitues are from foreign countries. I am not saying they are definately trafficked but it is a big possibility.

It's is a great place, just too expesive now, and I've always been a bit disappointed at how early much of the city centre shuts.

You must have been in the wrong areas. It is very easy to stay out drinking until 6 AM. You can drink 24 hours a day of you know the right places.

Interesting, I've just got home from Amsterdam a few hours ago - went for 4 nights with girlfriend :)

booked with easyjet couple months ago, think flight back was £20 (went there directly from another holiday in switzerland).

www.priceline.co.uk for hotel - you can get a 4* hotel for under €50 :)

loved the place..first time for us both..had a lot of fun...you can basically walk around all day..jumping from 1 bar to another..1 coffeeshop to another..although as said, it is pretty expensive, we spent about €250-€300 for 3 days for us both (not incl acc)

still feel like theres still loads of places we didnt go to, wanna go back again.

oh and i thought bulldog was pretty decent!
