So my dad's had a small heart attack and he's in hospital. Turns out he needs a triple bypass and me and my mum are a bit worried. Does anyone have experience with this procedure and what we should expect ?

:)

My dad had one of these about 3 years ago... was a very scary time. And for about a year after he didnt seem the same :( was like he was always drugged up, had checks and everything and they always came back ok, but the whole family could tell the differance and it did not seem right.

But saying that i used to work with somone that had one, after he came back to work he was the same person, if anything it was like he was given a younger mans heart for his energy

My Grandfather had one in 1990. He was laid low for quite some time after, but made a full recovery. The doctor told him it would last "about 10 years", and it lasted 16 (he passed away in 2006). I think techniques have improved considerably since then, and its now quite a common procedure, so there shouldn't be anything to worry about :)

My dad has had a double, as has my Grandad... I'll probably end up having one :/

No worries about it really, i mean its a horrible think to think about and can be frightening but both times they went really really well and it's a common operation to have ! :)

Don't lose sleep over it.
Hope everything goes well !

My dad had a triple by-pass 3 years ago and has recovered very quickly . He is in excellent health now.
I did a fair bit of research at the time and discovered that although it's a very invasive operation, it's got a very high success rates as it's a very common procedure.

Good luck with the recovery!

My grandad had a quadruple bypass in 1991. He was going to die if he didn't get the operation. For a couple of eyars after the operation he was very weak, had no energy and needed to rest a lot. However, after the recovery, he had a new lease of life. He's still going strong now despite having to put up with me :p

The transformation really can be amazing. Surgical techniques have improved a hell of a lot in the past 18 years too so the recovery for your dad might be much quicker.

My school headmaster had one and said to my father that he'd recommend anyone have it, as he felt about 10 years younger and had far more energy.

My grandfather had one a few years ago. It takes a while to recover - you feel weak to start with, and he had to do slowly increasing amounts of walking each day (my Grandmother would drop him at the edge of the village on the way back from shopping and he'd have to walk home!), but he's now absolutely fine (considering he's now 80!).

This is a common procedure now, even Bill Clinton had it done, so i wouldn't worry too much. I know every surgery has risks and opening your chest wide open is risky but it is a lot safer than it was years ago.

My father went in for a triple bypass about 6 years ago, and ended up having a quadruple.

Unless you're very strong and desensitised, I wouldn't suggest going to see him in the ICU. He won't know you're there, and will be hallucinating from the drugs anyway. I'd also strongly suggest you don't let you mother go into see him until he's out of HDU.

Afterwards, he is so much fitter it is brilliant.

Hi Neil,

My dad was 47 I think when he had his heart attack. He had a quadruple bypass and to be honest three years later I do forget what he has been through. He is the same person as he was before the operation and long may it continue that way.

For his job he has always been climbing, installing aerials and mauling with heavy ladders. This has not changed since :) He has also passed his PPL helicopters licence the other month too, go dad lol.
