Tripod advice

Yeah, I've just discovered that myself. The first site I looked at repeatedly referred to it as a 3 section tripod, but all images are of 3 section ones. That's even better then.

It should be a good tripod for bigish lenses, it's a similar size and weight to the 055PRO which is a classic as already mentioned. The benefit of the Gitzo over the 055 (and you need to work out if it's really worth another £450) is that it's CF and so transmits less vibration due to the material.

Crikey, this has certainly divided opinion. Just to confirm, generally I take my camera gear with me when I go on scenic walks etc, I rarely go somewhere purposely to shoot. Therefore size when folded and weight are quite important to me.

For example, we're off on holiday again in a few weeks, and I'll be wanting to stash this in my suitcase easily without worrying too much about the weight.

Does anybody have any comment/experience of the. vanguard I mention in my original post?

Do you not find that having 6 sections on a tripod causes you more vibration issues? Just googled that gitzo you mention and it lists it as a x6 tripod.

x6 is the series, the tripod is a 3 section as I didn't want the instability of a 4th section. Gitzo have a very good website that explains a lot of details but they do have a lot of models.

basically a Gitzo tripod numbered ABCD (e.g. 3531), the A indicates the diameter of the carbon fiber tuning (3), the C indictaes the number of sections. The D seems to be model revisions (the 3530 was the go to tripod, which was replaced with a 3531). B indicates some different models I beleive.

There are then some letters that indicate different features, s means systematic which means you get a wide top plate that allows any number of different accessories like center columns, leveling systems. I think model x comes with a center column that is removable. With the s you can buy one if desired. An advantage of the systematic is the wider top plate which gives more support for the head.

it is a terrific tripod with excellent design, it is also much lighter than most tripod of similar stability. I hope to still be using it in 20 years time, do it is a bargain to me considering a brand new D800 will be very oldschool in 5 years and costs 5 times as much.

Actually I've now looked at some images of the gitzo in the field, so to speak, and it's a lot larger than I realised, so vibration wouldn't be as much of an issue. I think I saw one on offer somewhere the other day for just under £600 actually.

Prices have gone up seemingly in the last year, I purchased from a bricks and mortar UK camera shop for £350, brand new latest model, no special discount. Mostly places had it listed at £400

have a serious think about a monopod. Much lighter, much smaller, much cheaper, packs very small. You can also get carbon fiber hiking poles that have a camera tripod screw on the top (under a lid) and a wide flat top).

As an update to this, I opted for the Manfrotto 190XPROB and 496RC2 head from Jessop's (had vouchers to use), so this combination only cost me £83 I think - pleased with that.

Not really used it yet, but will be taking it to Egypt with me next week :)

I picked one up last year and ant had a single issue, though I wish it was lighter lol
