trolling

I'm not sure I'd call most of the corrections to spelling trolling per se, my understanding of the definition was the same as the one Thorpy just posted. Of course some are nicer ways to correct someones spelling and grammar than others but provided the intention is good and it gets the point across does it matter how the correction is done?

If it is a minor error then I'll either ignore it or type the correct version in my post so if they want to they can amend in the future but if it is a whole post of poorly spelt words and missing/non-existant punctuation then I might be more tempted to post and point it out fully.

Why should you only apply the rules of grammar and spelling to an English essay?

If you could apply them to an essay, you can apply them just as easily to a forum post. If you don't, you're just plain lazy.

Poorly constructed posts that obscure the intended meaning of the post are the cause of many misunderstandings and problems.
I much prefer a clearly written post. When someone substitutes the word "borrowed" when they actually mean "lent" it does give the post a new meaning.
I take it that your moan is about the treatment you've received in the consoles forum for your initial rather confusing post?

Why did you edit it and take out the word "borrowed" and replace it with "lent" if "it isn't an English essay"?

Correcting someone's grammar isn't trolling. As far as I'm concerned, if your English is bad it needs correcting. You'll never learn otherwise. Don't go through life benig a gimp.

being > benig :p

I agree though, no need to get upset when people correct your mistakes, after all, you wouldn't want to go make the same mistakes on job apps. and such like would you? :p

I agree about grammar, but do you really consider capitals needed for posting on a forum? i agree about punctuation and people pointing that out gets rather annoying.

Why have one standard of typing / English for a forum and another for an essay? Surely it is second nature to simply do things correctly all the time?

What about the sentence "I helped my uncle, Jack, off a horse". :D

Sometimes it's important, but 99% of the time it really isn't...

I hate it when people missuse there, their and they're, is it that hard to use the right one?

Other than that I'm quite placid, but an entire post full of spelling and obvious grammar mistakes does grind my gears a bit.

I don't particularly mind the odd 'their/there/they're' cockup, Burger Van Apostrophes tend to tick me off though. Overt text speak really takes da biskit tho innit

Well I hate when people use apostrophes to pluralise. Especially when a sign reads "keep BBQ's off the lawn" right next to the university's amphitheater.

That's exactly what I always think :/

It's not as if it's easier or faster to skip punctuation or something... what do you save, probably one or two seconds over an average length post, if that?

i agree about it being necessary sometimes, but not all the time, and i also see the need to be gramatically correct, although i think some people seem abrupt when they post correcting your grammar, spelling and punctuation.

does this annoy anyone else or is it just me? when people tear your thread apart for no reason whatsoever? its a forum, not an english essay

opinions please anyone agree?

I have no problems with people correcting abuses of the English language. I don't mind typos as they happen naturally when you're typing but I absolutely hate text speak and I really hate it when people cannot be bothered to use the correct English phrase or word (noun, verb, adjective, whatever).

I very rarely point them out myself but it does annoy me a great deal. Anyone who has something like that pointed out should take it on board and not get so offended - it's a free education after all.

A badly written piece makes you look like a Monkey on Ritalin laced with caffeine and generally makes me skip the post.
