Trouble with first time GPU install - 6850

So I got the Asus 6850 from OcUK today. Installing the card was easy, but I'm having some difficulties with drivers I think.

When I powered on the PC, it seems the GPU cooler fan is very loud, I think it's spinning at maximum RPM. There was no display signal coming from the HDMI port, but I haven't tried the other ports. I haven't got an optical drive, but I downloaded the latest drivers from Asus (Version 8.861 for Win7 64bit from HERE and installed them. No luck.

It seemed to install ok, and there are folders in Programs for AMD and ATI, but I've got nothing in my programs list for menus or settings or anything. I can't get anything related to the software I installed for it. After installing, I tried plugging in the HDMI cable again, still no signal.

Any ideas or questions? Thanks.

How are you getting a display to install the drivers? I'm asuming you have another card plugged in? Also, have you plugged in the 6pin power connectors to the card?

Ideally, just have the 6580 installed in the top slot with power and the HDMI lead plugged in and you should get a display regardless of whether you have drivers installed or not.

Well, that's what I did initially. Installed GPU in top (PCIx16) slot. Plugged the HDMI cable into the GPU and turned it on. Fans were on maximum, but absolutely no display. Unplugged the HDMI cable from the GPU and plugged it into the onboard HDMI slot on the motherboard (like I've had for the last month or so), and the display works from the motherboard.

The GPU has 2x6pin plugs. My PSU has only 1x6pin but I've got a molex-6pin adapter and both 6pin sockets on the GPU are filled. Nothing.

Also, now my boot times have increased with the GPU in. It's hanging on the Windows splash screen for like 30-40 seconds whereas it used to just flash it for less than a second.

I'm assuming it's the spec in your sig? I would've thought using the 6850 with a Corsair CX430 would be pushing it.

Try the drivers from the AMD site, they are much more recent and best to use.

Yeah, I agree the CX430 is borderline, but according to the PSU's specs it should be ok.

Yeah, I also went to the AMD site and used there exe download. Using that, I got the same Catalyst install program as before. But no difference. Still doesn't work.

I still find it odd that the AMD software is not installing properly. Shouldn't I still be able to get into the AMD software if I've installed it even if the GPU isn't getting enough power?

Also, if the GPU is being powered correctly, will it show up in Windows' device lists or whatever?

No, don't know anyone else to try this on.

It won't hurt to get a better PSU, but I've heard lots of people with a similar system and the same PSU running this card just fine. Apparently the 12V rail specs should be ok for this system. :(

Argh, probably for the best. I still have two exams this week. I deal with it on the weekend. :D

So even without drivers installed, it still should have some display signal to the monitor? I may see what I can find, ask around.

I had one of those PSUs and it was absolutely CACK.

A million miles apart from the old Seasonic ones, it's a weak pile of plop.

It couldn't power up a 8800 GTX. Computer would either beep or get to post and shut down.

I haven't had any problems like that. With the GPU in and fans going crazy, everything still boots up just fine, no problems. I just have to use the onboard graphics. And my google-fu has found many people using this PSU and GPU combination without problems. :(

Hi there,

If everything is working as it should then that Corsair CX 430W PSU should be fine with an i5 2500K system and the HD 6850 graphics card.

Also, even with no drivers the card should display stuff (including POST and the BIOS screens) and get you into windows using the built-in OS drivers. If you can't see any of these things when all the power connections are installed then it sounds like you have a faulty card.

Are you able to test the other video outputs on the 6850? Hopefully a DVI-I to VGA adapter will come with the box and your Dell monitor has a DVI and Displayport input?(though you will need a mini-DP to DP adapter/cable to use displayport with that monitor)

DO you have another molex to PCIE 6pin power cable to hand?

My monitor only has DVI-D and VGA input. I was initially using an HDMI->DVId cable from the mobo to the monitor and it was fine. Used the same cable from the HDMI on the GPU and no signal. I then used just a normal DVI-D cable and that also didn't have a signal.

I've also got a DVI-I (VGA?) cable with the adapter, which I guess I can try, but it doesn't seem likely. I'm getting no display whatsoever during post/bios, nothing.

I bought a molex to PCIE 6pin power cable with this order, even though the GPU came with one (I didn't know). I tried the one that I bought from OcUK, but haven't tried the one supplied with the GPU. The GPU fans still run at max speed even with just 1 PCIE 6pin attached in either socket. Still no display signal whatsoever.

Sounding like the GPU is faulty.

Thanks for the help guys. I will try later and let you know. I really should not be messing with it right now; exams and all. It may be Thursday before I get back to this. :D

The thing is, I can't remember if I fiddled around in the bios when I first built it. Maybe I changed something? I'll check later. As for now, the card is in the pci slot, but the 2x6pins are not connected. I simply cannot live with that fan going like that.

In that case It may be worth turning off the power supply (at the wall or on the PSU itself), resetting the CMOS (short the two CLR_CMOS pins at the bottom right of the board), plugging in the graphics card power connectors (using the molex to 6pin that came with the GPU), turn it on and see if it works.

Will I 'lose' anything by doing that? I haven't overclocked or anything. But I mean like for settings with the SSD or anything like that?

I checked "Init Display First" and it was set to 'PCI' so I changed it to 'PCIE x16' and saved it. No difference. Still no display, and the fans still set to max rpm.

I'll try the CMOS on Thursday.

fan was maxed but i had a display :/ have you disabled onboard graphics (if you have them) and remove all old drivers (use driver sweeper) and if you are using a vga to dvi adapter make sure you plug it into the right dvi slot

Do I need to remove the onboard intel graphics drivers? I'm using the HDMI slot.
