if i change GPU platforms Nvidia>ATi should i do a complete OS reinstall or is a registry cleaner enough.

You should be able to uninstall the old drivers, pop in the new card and install the new drivers.

It wouldn't hurt to start from a fresh install though, your preference.
 
Windows 7 or Vista: Uninstall drivers, Shut down, Remove old card, Install new card, Power up, Install new drivers.

Simple as that.
 
Dont bother reinstalling your OS, just remove the drivers, dont even need to use driver cleaner these days i gather.

Driver cleaner has caused havoc for some users.
Try first just removing nv drivers, shut down, take card out, ati in, let windows do its own thing, restart once more, if all good put ati drivers on and check if your card is recognized correctly and if driver has installed correctly.

If you run into issues come back here and check what is best to do next, probably driver sweeper, but if you dont know how to use it come back and somebody will know

How strange is this!!! i,m really nervous about the switch to ATi,for me it,s all about FSX i hope the not so FSX friendly ATi switch is worth it,we will see.

its always nice to have fresh install.
FSX, interesting, this sim takes up most of my hard drive space :) although Flamming Cliffs 2 is keeping me occupied right now.

In fsx you are really CPU bound, more speed you can give it the better.
I switched from ATI 3870 x2 and i did have some issues, clouds have been pain for that card, as for most older ati stuff. I run 5870 just now and i can say that improvement is noticeable, you will be happy with you ati card

how is your card with FSX,i ordered my xfx AVP 5870 today, what addons are you using for FSX.
I got fed-up waiting for a 285gtx ocx to come along.

Thats excatly the card i got.

Haven't had any problems in recent years just uninstalling drivers without driver cleaner. My recent card history is ATI, nVIDIA, nVIDIA, ATI, nVIDIA, ATI.
 
OK OK i shouldn't have asked,what about REX it,s brilliant.sorry i meant the permanent FPS killers (scenery),so what about this card in FSX.

Hi there. Like you guys I've made the switch for ATi for FSX as apparently the 5870 is a bit better than the GTX285. Anyway I got the XFX AvP version too and it will arrive tomoro, but Vekiq, does the card have the back plate or is the PCB on show?
 
Same here papadan had been waiting to see how Fermi did and ended up taking the plunge on Saturday night... It'll certainly be an improvement from my 9800GT lol
 
i sold my 295gtx last week and am now using my old xfx 8800gt alphadog 386mb it,s
better than nothing but the bloody noise it makes,i hope this new xfx card is quieter.
let me know how you get on,have fun i know i will.
