Hi.

Well I downloaded Ubuntu 7.10 AMD64 as thats the version for even intel 64bit cpu's too, the thing is when I boot the cd and click install Linux a loading window comes up saying loading kernal or something, then screen goes blank and pc reboots.

Any ideas whats wrong?

It sounds like the 8800GT issue that some are experiencing. I've used *buntu on machines with 8800 GTs with nary a problem, but some folks have a load of trouble with it. I have no idea what makes me different.

No, I'm not sure that it's that, nor would I say that it's a no-go. There are ways around the problem and we haven't tested anything.

First off, what happens when you use the safe graphics option?

You might try the "alternative" installer since it won't care about your GPU. You'd then get the system installed before you have to sort out the graphics issues, if that is the problem.

Safe graphics option does the same thing. Alternative installer means another download does it not?

I had the same problem with a gts, use the text based installer. (the alternate one). The problems are gone once its installed.

A couple of bucks, nothing I couldn't swing. It'd just take a week or so longer than if someone in the UK sent it. By then it might be better to wait for 8.04! :p

Send me your address to my trust e-mail addy and I'll see what I can do, I usually have a CD or two hanging around spare. My workstation at work requires the alternative install CD due to some other ATI related quirk.

Thanks I'll send my info right away :).

Thanks both of you for offering to send me a cd :)

I had similiar issues and eventually managed to do a full install from the LiveCD.

You could give this a go if you just want to use the live environment first before doing the full install.

What I did:

1 Press F6 at boot menu then down arrow to select safe graphics option
2 Remove the word quiet from the command line
3 Change splash to nosplash
4 Added the commands irqpoll and acpi=off at the end of the command line.

This is what worked for me, although I had tried multiple combos of bios settings and various commands to reach this point.
Mileage may vary depending on the hardware in your system.

Hope it helps.;)

Is there not an option to install through windows in the next version?
Yep, I believe they're starting supporting Wubi as of 8.04 - which I think will prove popular amongst newcomers to *nix, and should help reduce the number of concerns beginners have with partitioning their drives.

Might as well send him 8:04 !!

8.04 is not a good idea right now, its still too shonky and updates are still breaking stuff (occasional screams of agony have been heard from folks at work that are using the beta.)
*pats his debian workstation*
Stable as they come, works without hassles, and so far no update has broken it.
