Trying to rein in a friends build - spec:

Its very sturdy. It closes on a magnet so it has a good feel to it and you can lock the front up too. The door also opens all the way round so it sits flat against the side, which is nice, i know a few cases where it has to stick out because of the hinge.
All the pannels are realy thick too because they have i think 3 layers of sound proofing, but its all black brushed aluminium outer, looks v'nice. Has a little vent box on the top with a big fan too. Its bottom mounted psu. The psu and hdd are in like a seperate case at the bottom and then the top houses the main components and drive bays making for better air flow and cooling.

N1, despotofmidnor, that detailed description was very useful, thanks.

If i do it will be an abridged version as i'm one of thise pc builders that pretty much stops for nothing once i get started. I take a breather once i'm in the BIOS...

I try to get the physical build completed within an hour - and then let it sit in the BIOS while i take a break.

That's a physical build in the sense of unpacking everything, checking for damage, skim reading mobo manual and getting it up and running outside of the case - sitting on a cardboard box.

Once i feel that it's stable'ish - i then insert it into the case - which usually takes about 30 mins to an hour. Depending on how careful i am with the wire management - which is usually minimal due to impatience.

Ok, fellow freaks, this is the final'ish revised spec with a view for him to order over the weekend. I'm hoping to get to him next week... (for those of you new to this thread it's a build i'm doing for a close friend.)

I've decided on the Silverstone Fortress as i'm keen to work on such user friendly case - but i would still like to know if it's possible to swap the glass paneled side for a solid one? (As this still could be sticking point - and i really want to work on one of these.)

I'm having trouble sourcing an EVGA 295 that's in stock :/ and, if i'm unable to do so, do any of you know which is the most safest, quietest, stable and guarantee proof other brand? (There's usually a consensus - but i appreciate it's probably too early to tell.)

The only other thing i'm slightly hesitant over is the DELL - i picked it as it's 'little brothers' are fantastic monitors but also because their customer service is brilliant - are there any major advantages with any of the other 24" mons? He will be watching Blue-Ray movies on it films on it...

Probably not much to pick over now - but if any of you know the answer to my case question i would like to hear it.

Edit: How quiet are the fans that come with the case? (i know the data but what's the reality - any users with personal experiences?)

I would go for BFG over EVGA there has been some fantastic reports about there customer service on these threads. But OcUK don't seem to sell the 295.

How come you didn't go for the SSD? Nice choice in case i prefer the raven though

I want the EVGA because of the warranty and the fact they let you put a third party cooler on without it effecting your guarantee. I'll consider the BFG though if i can't get hold of the EVGA - thanks.

How come you didn't go for the SSD?

Not my choice i'm afraid (i wasn't convinced they were worth it at first but now i wish he was getting one) - he felt a 30gig drive was too small - so he's going to wait till they've dropped in price and get a larger one. I did explain it would only have the OS's on it plus selected apps but he wasn't convinced. He wanted at least 250gig - and that's nuts money even for him.

I'm trying to convince him to get 3 drives for RAID 5 but the idea of it concerns him - he's worried it will be more prone to developing problems and i'm 80 odd miles away if he gets into problems.

Hope so - it's certainly the most expensive build i've worked on. Some of my past builds have been pricey but i've always had to make concessions somewhere to keep the budget in line. This really is a no-holds-barred build - totally over the top power wise but he should get a lot of mileage out of it...

His build is like a wish list for me - i'll probably be tempted to do one myself but i just can't justify it as i need to build a HTPC and buy a new laptop. I'll probably look again next year when prices have dropped.

Edit: How quiet are the fans that come with the Silverstone Fortress ? I know the data but what's the reality - any users with personal experiences?

Anyone with any personal insight to the above?

Because if the 'user' consensus is that they're noisy i'll add a few Noctua fans to the order to replace the existing case fans. (But if they're fine i'd be happy to save myself the effort - as i'll be on a finite time line to get the build finished before i have to head back home.)

OK, this is the final spec choice unless someone can point out something obvious that i've missed or misjudged.

I'm trying to increase my chances of getting him a decent clock while still using 12gig of memory by getting 12gig of matched sticks. Is their any real benifit in this as i would be happier getting the OZC or the Kingston and getting 2 x 6 gig sets? But i can only find 12 gig of Corsair matched stick sets.

I've seen posts of some guys getting really high clocks using 12gig at 1600MHz - i'm waiting for replies for their settings and components - but it's made me wonder if they achieved this buy using 12 gig matched sticks...

I've managed to source an EVGA gtx 295 and a Black Silverstone Fortress without a window - so obviously i wont be sourcing everything from OC which is why i've had to list the components rather than a photoshop upload.

He's decided against the DELL monitor as he likes the look of the Samsung (each to thier own) - price was a factor too in this so if you have any recommendations £300 is his budget for a monitor. Is the one i selected a suitable model for gaming and Blue Ray movies? (i have no idea as i buy DELLS and Viewsonic - and you really have to see a monitor in the flesh to rate it.)

I've had to add speakers too as his Game Theater XP PCI Card with speakers wont run on a 64bit OS as they wont be updating the drivers - so feel free to pass judgement on the ones i've chosen. He's happy to spend up to £100'sh.

If all seems ok i'll place the order but I would really appreciate feedback especially on the memory and monitor.
