Trying to troubleshoot my regularly locking pc :(

Hey guys!

I've recently conducted a new build, and have included the specs at the bottom of the post. Unfortunatly, my system is very prone to locking up and freezing when playing games (which is what I usually use it for), meaning I have to force restart it via power or reset button. When im browsing the internet or doing non-intensive things the pc has never locked up on me.

I've run a few tests such as fur mark and a prime program to test my cpu cores. I have used speedfan to monitor all my temps, and there is nothing I can see there as out of the oridinary when my pc locks up. I have a sneaking suspicion it could be the gfx card, as when i tell the control panel to run the fan at a constant high rate instead of being dynamic, it is less prone to freezing.

After these crashes, checking the event logs yields no information about what is causing these annoying crashes.

Does anyone know of an event log or program that may be able to help me narrow down the source of the issue or help me troubleshoot?

Any advice on what i can do?

Cheers in advance!

Specs:

OcUK Motherboard Bundle - Intel Core i7 2600K & Asus P8P67 Pro Intel P67 Mainboard **B3 Revision**

Gainward GeForce GTX 570 1280MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

G.Skill RipJawsX 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL )

Akasa AK-CCX-4002HP Venom CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA1366/AM2/AM3)

Coolermaster 1100W Silent Pro PSU

Asus Xonar Digi 5.1 sound card

Chances are its one of 3 things:

1) gfx card doesnt have enough power so crashes when under load - not likely looking at PSU, unless thats faulty, again not likely

2) gfx card is overheating - this can be checked by using GPUz and checking the box that says "log to file" then when it crashes next open the file and check the temp at the time of crash (checking it through speedfan just after doesnt give accurate enough reading)

3) could be a driver issue, have you uninstalled the drivers (using driversweeper) and installed latest ones?

try running games windowed.

run furmark for a couple of hours. That will heat up the GPU and not much else.

run memtest86.

run drive fitness test / HD Tune.

Yeah, GPUZ to monitor and log temps.

although my system is nothing like your spec i 2 have occasional lock ups and it seams to stop when i increase fan speed

As others have said, sounds like a power issue in my opinion. Highly unlikely to be the PSU not being man enough for the job with that PSU and your kit. Unplug and re-seat every power connector inside the PC, and reseat the GPU card. I had the symptoms you describe on my PC a while back, spent two weeks trying different drivers, PSU, etc and mine disappeared completely after pulling the graphics cards and reinstalling them. I thought they were in fully but it appears the PC would disagree at times! I know this will take a few minutes to do, but it's free and might solve your issue.

Cheers for the advice guys. I'll try reseating all the power units and the gfx card and then post up the results of whether that helped or not.
