TSMC says globalisation is dead, as it breaks ground on its advanced U.S Fab

TSMC made the statement as they broke ground on their fab in Arizona; stating that it's a process of work to diversify and for security. The Taiwan government though isn't as keen as TSMC and has made sure that the Fabs outside Taiwan will not be allowed to have access to the latest process node - for example this new fab will only be able to produce 3nm when the Taiwan Fab starts manufacturing on 2nm.

I think governments and corporations are realising that if you want to control production and have security factories have to be in the home country. Total reliance on factories in foreign countries is a strategic mistake.

Still waiting for Europe and the UK to get their ass in gear and start competing.

I saw a report that Belgium blocked the export to the uk of a key item used in our nuclear deterrent. Can’t even trust your allies now.

Intel broke ground last year on their new $20bn fab just outside my hometown, what will be the largest in the world once complete. Unlike TSMC's US fab, it will be using AMD developing the newest processes. The US is extremely serious in trying to bring chip production back onshore.

UK always sells anything good to Muricans, surprised ARM got blocked

just think with the HS2 money we could have been global leaders at some technology, wind, solar, battery storage, something... instead it gets peed into the wind

ah the ol' 'bloody immigrants' red herring..

Nothing to do with 12 years of useless government with no vision.

But this is a thread about chip making. Shouldn't we be using those juicy brexit freedoms to onshore some of this stuff? we can put it right next to the gene editing facility they are building..

It's a mix of these 2 and more, You cannot import the 3rd world en masse who largely have vastly incompatible cultures and mindsets while also slowly dismantling your own country to fill your pockets and expect a good outcome.

I'm an immigrant to the UK and I understand this very well but a lot of indigenous British people are sticking their heads in the sand pretending their own country isn't going to hell in a hand basket.

I'm just glad I won't be here when the **** inevitably hits the fan, Thankfully moving country at the latest of 2024 but all being well the end of next year.

Preach brother.

It took all of 5 posts to turn this thread from a topic about TSMC's fab building strategy to sanctimonious defeatist whing fest.

TSMC doesn't have any choice but to diversify it's locations, China is eyeing them for take over so it only makes sense to move all that production elsewhere. Also given the incentives this and the previous US administrations have given companies to build in the US why wouldn't you?
