TT99 convictees

I never understand why people don't do a bit of research into enforcement once they get their first points, as it's an easy way to prevent it happening again.

With a bit of knowledge, and an app like Waze/satnav with updated speed cameras, it's pretty difficult to get caught. You soon gain a kind of sixth sense for where police/camera vans are likely to be as well, so even without a sat nav you get an idea of the places you need to slow down a bit.

I've got a clean licence despite doing high mileage, usually at whatever speed I fancy. If I ended up getting 6 points, I'd probably slow down a bit, but hopefully that day will never come. :p

It's purely down to luck, FFS I HATE such attitudes. It's **** all to do with luck, at least accept responsibility for your ******* actions. Everyone speeds but don't try and pass it off as luck when you have 9 points!

Sorry were you referencing me where I have never said it was luck? And also accepted responsibility.

Of course it's luck? If you speed and don't get caught then you're lucky. Getting 12 points in 3 years is primarily due to being an idiot and not learning from the previous 9 points, but again, still luck. I'd imagine that maybe 90% of drivers will speed once a day at least - are you saying that it's skill and awesome judgement that nothing happens?

I've been driving 10 years, never had a point. I personally would say it's down to luck that I've never had any points.

There is certainly judgement in what locations speed, for how long, the time of the day and awareness of enforcement.

Or simply don't speed and take luck out of the equation completely?

Well obviously, thanks for that
I'm guessing you're not going to own up to speeding at all then given the preaching?

It's irrelevant whether I own up to it or not, since this is an internet forum and you "know" that "everyone speeds", ergo I must speed, and if I claim I don't I'm lying.

All I'm saying is that it takes certain level of naivety to claim that not getting points for speeding is purely based on luck.

It takes "luck" (amongst other things) to not get points for speeding when you are speeding, it doesn't take any luck to not get points for speeding when you are NOT speeding.

Logic would dictate that if you value your licence (particularly in the case where you already have 9 points), you stop relying on luck, and simply don't speed.

Motors eh? The only place where if you don't break the law you're both a **** and a liar

I'm not really sure luck comes into it (what is luck anyway?)

It isn't lucky that someone has no points despite driving like their trousers are on fire if their observational skills are absolutely top-notch so they see all the hazards/cameras/whatever.

They are arguably safer than the hapless driver that doesn't even know how fast they are going who is "unlucky" to get some points when they creep over. If they didn't see the camera or van they probably wouldn't have seen the child/car pulling out/cyclist/whatever either.

I generally think you make your own luck - pick your moments to press on, make safe progress and pay full attention when you're driving and you'll probably not pick up many points or get into as many accidents.

Too many people behave as if driving is a passive activity and one of the consequences of that attitude is that they think everything happens to them rather than them being complicit in the event.

Oh definitely, but at the end of the day, it's still resting on luck!

No it isn't.

You don't get 12 points on your licence because you are unlucky. You get 12 points by speeding everywhere and not paying attention to the road and what is around you.

My uncle, who used to be a policeman, always said to me that "you don't get caught speeding, you get caught not paying attention".

I won't claim I don't exceed the speed limit at times, but it is a rarity. On the previous occasions where I have been caught exceeding the speed limit, with the benefit of hindsight I can say that on all but one of those occasions I was not paying adequate attention to driving.

If you value your driving license (who doesn't?) then pay more attention or simply don't speed.

Very well put.

Can't disagree there. I was only ever caught once in 9 years of driving and that was due to not paying enough attention!

I'd argue that attention is probably worse issue anyway.

I think my original luck comment was blown out of proportion as I did caveat that I would be driving under the speed limit if I was close to a ban so at that point luck is out of the equation. Hell even 3 points had me on tenderhooks for a while so dread to think what 6 or 9 would be like.
