Just bought a Tuniq Tower from OcUK, and spent a day last week blitzing my case, took everything out, cleaning and dusting down everything as it was a complete mess.

I know when I was doing my research before buying this, I wanted to find reports and pictures of people with similar systems to check everything would fit in ok, so I am posting this in the hope it will help someone in the future.

My new favourite tool is compressed air after this job!

Also, my specs are:

Case: Antec 900
Power Supply: Corsair HX 620W
Motherboard: Gigabyte P35C-DS3R
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (B3 revision)
Memory: 4GB Corsair XMS2 Dominator DDR2 @ 4-4-4-12
Graphics: Leadtek 8800GTS 640mb
Hard Drive Total: 1.67TB
Operating System: Windows Vista Ultimate x64

Need coffee for any job!

Note, if anyone is reading this as a guide, please plug in your 4pin power supply lead to your motherboard before you put it in your case, as I didnt and its a ****ing pain to reach behind the Tuniq!

Back in the case

Not the best cable management, but its tidier than it was and shouldnt be as much of a problem. Going to feed some more cables through the cable tie and tighten it when I reinstall additional hard drives.

Nice temps .. now overclock that CPU :)

Are those temps with the fan off?

Yeh im going to overclock it in the coming weeks, was just a quick screengrab!

They are with the fan on about 50%.

Those temps look a little off tbh. It's either very cold in your house or Coretemp is reading your cpu wrong.

How do you mean off? Too high or low? The room it is in is quite cold, I dont have the heating on in that room very often, so it does get quite cold. Bios read the temp at about the same as well when booting.

fro5tie download real temp and speed fan see what they give you.

Yeh I have speedfan, will download realtemp and run them both see what they are giving. Why do you think its wrong, too high or low?

You need some compressed air for your case :p

I know, I used a big can of it with all the components it was filthy, took everything out of the case (bar dvd-rw and psu), and vacuumed it! Those fans are buggers for dust.

The Tj. Max in coretemp is quite low (hence your low temperatures). Did you change it manually?

Mine is at 100 simply because there is so much controversy over the Q6600's actual Tj. Max and its the default.

Didnt change anything, didnt realise tj max was important. Im just reading up on it now infact, if anyone wants to quickly explain? ;)

Indeed - add 15 degrees to those temps (or use real temp ;))

B3s do tend to run hotter than GO stepping

Nice job though :)

Yeh the B3s are slightly hotter, I pcked my Q6600 just before the G0s came out.

Holy mother of god, that is far and away the dustiest set of internals Ive seen in a long while..!!

Get a couple of tins of compressed air take your case outside and get blowing..!!

Good job on the cooler though fella.!!

Haha yeh it was quite a mess, its much better now though. Going to have to keep a regular stock of compressed air in though, the fans make it terrible for dust in there, and its so hard to keep food airflow with 5 hard drives!

Nice job mate all you need to do now is keep it looking like that all the time

I intend to try! Where abouts in Rotherham you live, I'm from that neck of the woods myself!

Hopefully going to buy a 1TB hard drive in the future too. Ive got 2x 300gb, 1x250gb and 1x80gb for storage (plus a seperate 320gb for operating system). I bought all the drives many a year ago when they were the biggest you could get, so its taking up a hell of a lot of room in my case. So future plans are to get a 1TB and wack that in and remove all the other storage ones.

Also, quick question if anyone is knowledgeable on this.

I've got an Antec 900 case, which has 2x front intakes, 1x20cm top fan, and 1x rear exhaust. Is there any down side to putting the rear or top fans (the ones located nearest my Tuniq) on highest speed setting? I cant think of anything, but maybe I'm overlooking something which could negatively affect the heatsink?

(ignoring sound concerns as it can be as loud as it wants as long as it cools!)

You can set the tj max in real temp to 100 via the settings. Nice job though on the cleaning, going to those lengths as removing everything I personally would have bought the 900-2 and slapped everything back in that.

Haha I'm not made of money! Was a good job, something to do and quite interesting.

So if the tj max should be 100, then speedfan temps are right, coretemp needs +15 and realtemp needs +10?

If thats the case, then what are the temps like for stock speed? Seems a bit high, but is that just because its a B3 revision not a G0?

I had a Q6600 B3 with tuniq tower also, both were lapped but the temp was still 70+ on all cores under prime95 test, though I was running it 3.33ghz 1.42V. At that speed even at idle the temp was well into the 40s so I'd say your temp is normal.

OK thanks for that info mate. Good to see some people have/had similar hardware as me to compare too. Did you not have any problems with 70+ temps? Ive usually read that 65 as a max is a good rule of thumb?

Yes it is but prime95 puts the temp up at least 10C+ when compaired to normal max load so I could still live it. I've had it upto 90C+ a few times too when I went crazy with the voltage and it started to throttle.

Yeah, I dont think I would ever have full load through normal use, most intensive thing would probably be running GTA IV!

Will have a play with it anyway, now atleast I know what kind of temps I am really getting!

Pretty low temps for 100% on a quad core! Leaves plenty of room to overclock it :p

And nice work cleaning it up, was well dusty before, never seen a PC like it haha! That cooler looks great as well, its huge but does the job great! :)

Yeh the temps seem ok, they have levelled out a bit higher than that screenshot now. Yeh I love the cooler, looks so menacing with the "spiked" fin designs on the sides of it.

Overclock it already! :( It'd be interesting to see how far you can get your B3 upto.

Haha, I will do mate dont worry! Hard to find time to do it though, going to take it slow, never OC'd before so just going to do it one step at a time. Will keep my results posted as and when.

I mentioned in another thread that i had a QX6700 with a tuniq tower on it. I was ranting that the tuniq was useless as the temps were mid 60s all the time.
I took it apart last week, re-greased it with AC5, reseated it, took sime time adjusting the screws to look balanced, fired it up and was getting low 20s for temps on all cores!!!!!!
So, i might buy another tuniq seeing as my mobo/cpu spec is the same as the OP, albeit i have the G0 Stepped cpu. Currently running at 3.51GHz on stock cooler, giving me 50°C on all cores.
The OP has asked this too, but can someone explain TJ max and what it does please?

It can be tricky to get it seated right, I mean I'm not 100% sure mine is seated perfectly, but seems to be OK for now. If I run into any problems when overclocking I might have to reseat it. Only used the Tuniq TX-1 paste or whatever it is called as well, I reckon if I cleaned the CPU/HS properly with grease remover, used Arctic Silver 5, and properly screwed the Tuniq in I might be able to squeeze the temps down, but for now I'm just going to play it by ear.

(when i say properly screwed in, i mean doing like 1 turn, then opposite one turn, then other corner one turn, etc and doing it "evenly")

Also - 3.51ghz on the stock intel cooler?! God thats nice work, could never do that with a B3!

actually had it at 3.6Ghz but prime95 didn't like it. Saying that it didn't like 3.5 either but in the real world its not crashed on me yet.
So....what does TJ Max do? Doesn't sell branded clothes cheap does it? ;)

Haha thats first thing that springs to mind!

This is probably your best read, im still just understanding it so i wont try and explain - http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/docs.php

Hi guys,

Just started to OC this, as I said its my first attempt at overclocking so just taking it step by step. Had a few problems before as nothing I set in BIOS to OC was being accepted, so flashed to the latest version and we are OK now. Ive knocked the FSB from 266 to 278 so its now at 2.5ghz. Idle temp is approx 37/38ºc. Load temps however shoot up to late 60's.
When I was at stock 2.4ghz, load was 60, should upping the clock speed 100mhz be pushing the temp up nearly 10ºs?

Not sure if anyone is familiar with the bios on my motherboard gigabyte P35C-DS3R (F10 bios). But when you change the cpu clock speed it says in flashing red that you should set system voltage control to auto - so i did this. Should this be set to manual, as Ive always thought with overclocking you only move the voltage when the sys becomes unstable? Im thinking that if the voltage is being controlled by the system, then when prime95 rapes the cpu its pulling more voltage than it needs, and putting temps up?

Any tips guys, cheers

What kind of temps do you guys regard as a safe max to push a B3 up to? Im sure before I had my Tuniq mine used to hit stupid temps like 85/90 under load, but now with OCing I just want to be a bit cautious.

At 2.5ghz running prime95 on all cores temps get to 67/68º. Is this bad, as its only a small OC and ideally I'd like to be up at 3ghz or so, but worried that the temps will be crazy based on this evidence.

Thats decent. To be honest I dont think its mounted perfectly. Did you use the Tuniq thermal paste or AS5/similar? Whats this I read about using washers with the screws/springs as well to make the pressure and contact to the CPU better, have you tried that? I think the cooler is doing a way better job than my stock one, but its not acceptable yet, needs tweaking and Im just trying to figure out my best options are. How hard/much effort is lapping? From what I read it sounds like an arse of a job but not really looked into it a great deal.
