Tuniq Tower 120 - My installation with pictures

I didn't use the Tuniq's own paste, used some 'silver based' compound. I did put a washer on each of the screws because I found it quite easy to move the tower with my finger, it didn't seem to have enough pressure on it.
I lapped the CPU because of uneven temps and thought I'd might as well do the tower while I was at it. (CPU was easy, tower was harder due to the size).

Ok thanks for that info, the tower is very stable with it just screwed in on my motherboard, so it wouldnt be for that, its just ive heard that it can improve performance, so might give it a try, not like washers are expensive or anything! I think im going to get some AS5 and remount it.

Question: How do you take the top fan out of the Antec 900 case? Because if I could do that then it would make it a lot easier to remove and remount the Tuniq without taking the motherboard out.

Dude, i have a QX6700 cpu, but same mobo and cooler as you.
I remounted the tuniq with AC5 and this time i screwed the tower down as far as it would go. The result? it wouldn't boot cos i'd screwed it down so far that the screws touched the case on the otherside of the mobo and shorted out, doh! *facepalm*
However, i then carefully wound each screw back until there was just 2 lines of thread protruding from the mobo on each screw.
The new result? Well the QX6700 which is an extreme cpu runs hotter than hot chilli on a hot day, was now running in the low 20s :D instead of an idle 60°C before reseating. So i mildly clocked it up to 2.7GHz with temps hovering around 37°C now.
Bottom line, i used to b!tch about the tuniq being £35 garbage, but with careful tweaking it shows how good a cooler it can be. Its just a fiddly fugger to tweak is all.

Ok thanks for that, yeh i can imagine its a pain to get right. Ill do a bit of tweaking, its on pretty tight i think, but not excessively. Glad to hear other peeps have good knowledge about this or my pc would probably be on fire by now! Cheers

Just ordered some Arctic Silver 5, now just looking at what to use to remove the Tuniq thermal paste. I just used a cotton wool bud last time and gently wiped it all off from the CPU and the Tuniq, is this ok, is it really necessary to purchase some isopropyl alcohol or similar to do the job?

P.S. Apologies for all the questions, im a virgin OCer and just want to get things right! :D

I use lighter fluid and some soft cloth.

Isopropyl alcohol or Arcticlean will dissolve the old thermal paste and makes it a lot easier to get off.

It might "look" clean to you now, but if you rub some isopropyl on it, you'll see some even more stuff coming off.

The paste fills up the "cracks and canyons" in the surface of the chip/heatsink contact area.

Always best to clean it properly in my opinion.

Ok guys, thanks for the advice, ill have a look see, isopropyl alcohol is only a few quid isnt it? Where might I get it from? B&Q somewhere like that?

its quite readily available, although the smallest tin of lighter fluid (the yellow tin with the red nozzle) is spot on for use and cheap (i think....i don't smoke, so don't really know).

No worries I'll have a hunt around! Used to have a bottle of lighter fluid in my pyromanic days...

Just remounted, cleaned with lighter fluid and applied some AS5. Im going to use my pc as normal, no overclocking yet, and count to 200 hours as Arctic Silver suggest to properly gauge temps.

Seen a PC at work that is tucked hidden behind a desk which is so badly dusty on the outside. Took a picture but its on my phone so will have to get it off later, I am scared to open it up and look at the inside, its completely covered on all the outisde vents, cant even tell they are there!

Edit: this might seem a silly question - is the rear fan on the Antec 900 an intake or exhaust?
