Turn Baldurs Gate and its sequel into the single best CRPG experience you'll likely ever encounter

Dont forget you can use a utility called shadowkeeper to remake the party joinable characters into anything you want.

You can also start as a multiplayer game and create an entire party of your own characters.

Have you ever played through as an evil character/party?

I dont like multiplayer games because you dont get any party interaction. I'd rather play the game solo than use a custom multiplayer group. I've also never done an Evil run through, I play a Neutral character at least and have only used Edwin + Viconia in my group along with Jaheira, Minsk, and Aerie (BG2). The party arguments and break ups that followed were awesome :D

I just started a solo swashbuckler / mage run through and made a couple of videos. They come out really dark though, and need to be viewed in full screen :(

I'm setting myself up to dual wield Drizzt's Scimitar +5 Defender, plus Belm in BG2.

Edit - I just extended the second video with some more imba polymorph self clips :p

Mages in BG = awesome fun.

Much as I loved the Baldurs Gate games, they aren't Planescape: Torment. Great post tho.

Has anyone playing the BWP activated the Mold Golem at The Friendly Arm Inn? I've got the six keys but I seemed to have missed any clue as to the order they must be used.

Another clip of soloing the Iron Throne + Degrodel's House (one of, if not the hardest encounter in Baldurs gate, I needed to burn through a wand of fire to solo it):

I reached level 11 mage and unlocked my swashbuckler levels, so headed onto Drizzt to try and kill him .......

Turns out I'm gonna need a party and lots of cheese to manage that :(

I buffed myself to -12 AC, and had a Thaco of 3 with the Eagle bow, Arrows of Piercing, and Bracers of Archery, and he still instant cleaves me to death in 2 or 3 hits, and I cant land a single hit on him :x

First I'm gonna try with a wand of monster summoning, I hear that works. I want his Scimitars, and then I can buff myself to -15 AC with this build and go chop chop with the Swashbuckler bonuses + haste + tensers transformation. Defender adds +2 to AC, and frostbrand is a plain +3. Then in BG2 you get the Belm that adds an extra attack per round which is massively helpful for a swashmage or kensage based build.

Tutu added in Melf Minute Meteors + Polymorph self scrolls into Sorcerous Sundries which have been very useful for soloing a lot of stuff, but everything is useless against Drizzt. I really wish I had a spell trigger loaded with multiple lower resistances, but that would make it far too easy :p

I killed Drizzt :D

Well, I cheese killed him with a load of thief snares :(

Now I'm a wizard with -15 AC, +2 attack and damage rolls, thief skills + awesome weapons :D

bg15aca.png

My Melfs minute meteors almost never miss, and after I run out of spells I fall back on a polymorph to a sword spider or fire off my wands, and later in BG2 I'll be able to use Tensers transformation.

Haste + Tensers contingencies plus mage buffs and swashbuckler attack bonuses = indestructible Bhaalspawn of doom :D

The only problem is that I think you lose the Scimitars after you import into BG2 and you dont get to kill Drizzt again until the underdark :(

^ You can keep any gear you import over to BG2 if you pause the game during the intro in Irenicus's dungeon (the screen will be black - just open your inventory and drop all the gear on the ground). When the game starts the gear will still be at your feet :P

To the person asking for tips:

In the beginning you don't have much in terms of fire power so you have to really play smart with your biggest asset - Jaheira. Her healing and entanglement will help you fight off tougher enemies. Also, once she is out of spells, do remember to use her shapeshifting abilities. At least in the beginning of the game they are decent.

Mage department - unless you have one, your best choice by far is Edwin (obtainable in Nashkel if I remember correctly):
high constitution = highest hp of all the mages you will encounter
opposing school is of very little significance (identify can be easily worked around with scrolls and/or high lore score)
his necklace means he will have the most spell slots available to any mage (you included)
only con of his is his alignment (and you may have to sacrifice Dynaheir/Minsc - both acceptable as you can get Kagain as the fighter)
Quayle (or whatever you spell his name - the gnome illusionist/rogue) is decent as well.
Don't bother with Xzar and Xan as mages. One has pitiful amount of HP (and will die quickly and often) and the other, while equipped with a fancy looking sword, has a highly limited spell selection (no evocation = fail).

HP - whenever you gain a level switch your difficulty level to easiest and then level up - this will guarantee you max HP (makes it a lot easier in the long run)

For clerics you can't really go wrong (aside from that halfling rogue/cleric of cyric later in game). Branwen, Viconia and the dwarf fellow you meet in the mines are all decent at their trade. Vici has the added benefit of highest wisdom score (the most spell slots) and magic resistance but is evil and has very low strength.

Hope the above helps a bit :)

Dont forget that Dynaheir is completely fine as a mage for good parties, she also has 16 con so has the max HP for a mage, and 17 Int is good for a mage. Imoen also has 16 con and 17 int on top of her 18 Dex, hence most players dual class her to a mage at around level 5 or 6.

Edwin is superior even to a player mage with his amulet, and he has the least disadvantageous specialist school. Dynaheir and / or a dualed Imoen are both completely fine too.

Quayle isnt a very good choice in BG1, even with Tutu / BGT installed. He has too low a wisdom score for his Cleric multiclass, and it will take him a very long time to be able to get up to casting cloudkill (in the unmodded game, he cant get to level 9 mage). Both Edwin and Dynaheir make better choices, cloudkill is a must have spell later on into the game.

Dynaheir is an Invoker, so she loses Enchantment spells, but as long as you fill her spellbook with magic missiles, webs, fireballs and cloudkills, she is brilliant throughout the fist game.

Don't bother with Xzar and Xan as mages. One has pitiful amount of HP (and will die quickly and often) and the other, while equipped with a fancy looking sword, has a highly limited spell selection (no evocation = fail).

True that Xzar has a pitiful amount of HP with only 10 con, but Xan is even worse with just 7 con lol.

7 con enchanter with no evocation spells. Oh, wait, but he gets a fancy sword.... yet he would die in one hit if you send him in to attack anything with it :x

Though I did use Xan in my very first game of BG, because I didnt know I had to go to the Friendly Arm Inn to pick up Khalid and Jaheira. I had me as a fighter, montaron, xzar, imoen, xan and branwen in my first go at the game, I still remember that :D

And heres drizzt, candlekeep and catacombs done :D

Being given Polymorph Self and Thief traps in Tutu makes things a little too easy :p

Which is the official turn of events for her as we find out in BG2 :P

Not as your single choice but in a 2x warrior + rogue + cleric + wizard + support he is excellent as a support cleric/wizard (thought he was rogue/wizard but I put it down to me not having played bg1 for over 10 years lol)

Does she not lose Conjuration as well? I thought that was the case. If not, giving up enchantment indeed is a fair trade off (least in BG1, in BG2 slightly less so).

No Jaheira all the way through Nashkel? Ouch. You must have been running from those ogres in the woods like hell, lol.

Invokers only lose Enchantment in the BG2 engine, in the BG1 engine they lost Conjuration as well which was lame (no melfs / flame arrows). But in the modded BGT or Tutu game the only important spell they lose is Greater Malison, which isnt really needed in BG1 (In BG2, Greater Malison > Glitterdust > Finger of Death / Chromatic Orb spam is mighty powerful).

Yea, I went all the way through Nashkel mines with imoen, montaron, xzar, and garrick on my first ever playthrough, picked up Xan for my 6th, then found Branwen at the carnival at dumped Garrick for her. I never listened to Gorian telling me to go to the friendly arm inn.

I was getting owned like crazy by mere kobolds, everyone was still level 1 while going through the mines :(

Yeah, that must be the reason I tended to sacrifice her to Edwin. I could live without any Divination (or Necromancy as the case would be with Quayle) spells. Losing Evocation / Conjuration in BG1 was a no go. Latter of the two was nigh on essential if you wanted to kill Drizzt.

And you still managed to finish it? I applaud you for your persistence, sir! My main 'the kobolds, they are everywhere!' moment was in Firetwine Bridge ruins (i think that's what it's called) with the endlessly spawning, fire arrow shooting kobold commandos. How I managed to get out of that place, I can't quite recall, but it was agonizing.

Seem to be stuck at this stage for about 4 hours now, is it a case of no patience or has it stalled? as you see I entered the path of my Baldur's Gate directory but alas no joy.

Durlags tower and the Tanarri demon in Ulgoths Beard soloed :D

I had to unleash my exploding arrows and arrows of piercing to kill the cultists, and use the staff of striking plus potions of magic blocking and heroism with draw upon holy might to kill the demon.

Potions of Heroism seem to be far too rare. Theres a white + yellow pot thats really abundant but only works for warrior classes, the red pot of which I've only found two works for all other classes and reduces Thaco by 80%, and gives a 20% bonus to thief skills.

I'll have to save the second potion and the rest of the staff of striking for Sarevok, I just have the werewolf island left to do.

Well, never played BG before but just got the discs so going to try this mod out for the widescreen addition. I've kept it at minimum as I would like to play it as it was "sort of" intended, with fixes and BG in the BG2 engine of course.

I have good intentions with my character. ^_^ Just doing the CLI patcher, probably going to take years. :p
