TV Broken... how scuppered am I? (EDIT: Getting a replacement! But what?)

Can't help but have a nosey at the possibilities... but the John Lewis website is down at the mo!

Got myself looking at this:
https://www.richersounds.com/tv-projectors/all-tvs/panasonic-tx55fx700b.html

4K, HDR, local dimming make it seem like a good option...

you wouldn't get a 55" if yours is a 50" unless there are no like for like tv's in 50".

e.g. it was a 50" plasma and you demand an OLED as it's the only like for like tv with pure blacks and the only OLED's are 55" upwards.

Funny that, a friend of mine had a warranty replacement with JL for a 50" TV which they exchanged for a 55".

I fixed one of these not long back for the grand total cost of around £1.50. Pound to a penny it's caps on the power delivery board. If they let you keep it they are dead easy to fix if you have a soldering iron and aren't a complete moron :)

Update!

So... it occured to me after the visit that I didn't have any email chain or contact details to get any update as to what was happening so I gave them a ring.

Problem was, when I called, they couldn't find any record of my repair in their system. 15 minutes later and they find a note in the original order saying "repair organised for Thursday" and, in turn, a couple of details about what was happening.

Long story short, original guy at John Lewis turned out to be incompetent: never recorded the incident correctly, booked a "trouble shooter" (who usually get used for questions like "how do I turn on my SkyTV box on my TV) rather than "repair specialist" and I'm now waiting until Tuesday for someone to collect the TV with the intention of actually trying to repair it.

*sigh*

Oh well, stay tuned for the next episode of "Roy wants his gawd damn TV working!"

EDIT: Collected for repair!

Ok, they can't repair it!

Options:
1) Get Samsung UE50NU7400 as replacement with 1 year guarantee
2) Get £565 cash
3) They put £565 towards new TV and if I just pay £1 over that I'll get the TV plus 5 year guarantee on top

To me option 3 looks like the best bet.

So, what should I get?

Looking for:
- On the lower side of £600 unless there's something special (obviously needs to be above £565 :) )
- 50inch
- 4K (probably goes without saying)
- As much HDR format support as I can get (am I correct we've not settled on a specific standard yet?)
- Local dimming possible at this price point?
- Low latency screen (do the odd bit of gaming via Steam Link so obviously want to cut out down on latency as much as possible)
- Available to buy from John Lewis

that if you want to spend as little as possible

if you want a really good tv with FALD - which is proper local dimming then you need to go for this

https://www.johnlewis.com/sony-brav...-inch-with-freeview-hd-youview-black/p3489616

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLDxEE9Wwng

there is a full video review of the TV. it gets a highly recommended award and they say there is no other tv that even competes with it at it's price point or can come close.

the more you spend the more your options widen. you can go 65", OLED, FALD, etc. as for HDR you want ideally a bright panel with good contrast but also 10 bit. that isn't available for £600. in fact the more you spend the better it gets. which is why i'm recommending spending £1050 on a 49" tv over £600 on a 55" tv as it's much better in terms of quality. however judging by the simple basics you are asking. you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference in reality once you get used to the picture and have nothing side by side to compare it to. also coupled with the fact you want to spend as little as possible.

people who want cheap usually means they don't want the best. so for you i'd go with the hisense. for an enthusiast they should go with the sony.

TV wise, you're in a bit of a sucky position currently, as we're close to Black Friday, so most TVs are quite over priced. If you can hold out until then, you'll like save 10% at least, bringing models currently out of budget, into budget.

With TVs, it is a case of the more you spend, the better they are.

The F6500 was a very decent TV back in the day, and unfortunately, to get something of equal quality, you'd currently be looking at stuff in the 800+ bracket.

This year is especially poor for TVs, as many switched from using the same panel technology as yours, to IPS, which offers better viewing angles, at the expense of black levels (especially noticeable in the evening/night.

I highly recommend posting on AVForums - there are a few people on there that'll give you some great advice on current technology

black friday is a myth. they have all the crap tv's on sale. like polaroids for £300.

all tv's will depreciate given time. why not wait until jan-march then when they go EOL and will have 50% off?

pointless waiting especially since he's essentially getting £600 off any tv he wants.

Crap TVs like OLEDs, XE85, XE90 and XE93? These TVs went on sale during black friday last year, and got pretty well discounted. I know a number of people that bought them, and the prices only dropped back to that level post Christmas as the newer models were coming in. In fact, stuff like the XE93 didn't really drop to the black friday sale price again.

were these deals available from john lewis?

iirc most of them are amazon deals which offers a crap warranty in comparison.

No, usually lesser known companies like Hughes Direct, sometimes Richer Sounds, PRC etc

You can usually get places like JL to price match, if they haven't done already

I agree black friday is usually pants, but it's THE time to get TVs, as the price is usually low enough (perhaps 5% above the lowest it'll ever be at worst), but you can guarantee they've got stock at the retailers with decent warranty

given his options

number 3 is clearly the best one. which means john lewis only.

he's already getting a £565 discount because the tv died and in the OP he had written it off.

he would likely need to take the day off work on black friday. in order to get a decent tv from JL on BF and that is if JL will let him buy then too. As he will be getting it through warranty.

so he'd be best taking £565 cash then. because any new tv from RS and JL will have 5 years anyway. so you are suggesting then he goes with option 2 and he waits without any tv for the time being.

JL are happy for you to put getting a new TV on hold, but to be safe, I would take the £565 cash and put it away for the time being.

Then again, it's a 2 month wait, so it's up to OP if he wants a new TV now or can wait.

If he's after one now, I'd get either the U7A from Hisense, or the NU7400. But tbh, they're both mediocre TVs compared to the one he had.

not mediocre at all.

if anything the f6500 was mediocre. it only got a recommended award. whereas the sony i linked to got the highly recommended.

Yes but the FX9005 is also north of 1K

The U7A and NU7400 have sub par anti reflection filters and neither are particularly bright. You're not getting much TV for your money. The F6500 was given a recommended during a time at which we had plasmas readily available, and so LCD based TVs weren't as popular.

Lot of replies this afternoon! :D

Ok, so I went for the 55U7A.

Because I was able to take the money (£565) i was able to expand my options and went to Richer Sounds - 6 year guarantee plus they don’t look like they’re going under in the next 12 months!

I did try to make one hell of an argument on the phone to John Lewis that the replacement option / money value wasn’t nearly giving like for like, but they weren’t budging.

But yeah, just don’t have the spare cash to put anything else in at the moment - timing’s just a little crap!

I’ll see how I get on!
