TV licence. how do you pay yours

My sister in law tried to be clever whilst at uni. She didnt buy the license and when a nice chap paid her a visit she pulled the ariel lead out and put it away. She told the chap she only used the TV for watching DVD's.

The chap put his finger on the ariel socket at the back of the TV and the picture came up on the TV. He told her that the channels have been tuned in which proves that she watches normal TV.

She had to pay up in the end.

She ain't that clever to start with. Even if you just watch DVDs you need a license.

I still can't get round that you have to have one. I think you should be able to buy one if you want to watch and use the BBC's channels and features, like you do if you want to watch cable and sky channels.

Not paid mine for about 2 years as I was living in a top floor flat so could get away with it. Will probably start paying now as I have moved and you can see the TV in the bedroom from outside.

Damn those 50 inch plasmas for being soo big :D

Mrs paid mine and they used to send letters to me beause I had bought a new tv and not registered one in my name, although the address had one and they are too incompetant to see that for themselves.

They came to my door and gave me a card which I have to pay £6.50 on every two weeks because I was a naughtly boy had had been watching telly without a license.

If I don't pay it on the day each two weeks they barrage my door with a horde of letters with nasty big red warning letters inside the next day.

Still better than £1000 fine they could have slapped me with I guess. Remember kids, pay your TV license.

Thats only true if you are using a DVD player that also incorporates a digital receiver or that can display and record from TV.

I'm sure that was how it was explained on the TV license website not long ago . I'll double check.

We didnt pay for a TV license for 2 years at uni, in 2 different addresses, and all we ever got was a letter or 2 threatening us. The one time we did pay it (2nd year) we got more letters than when we didnt! They are incompetent at updating their databases and as such we decided not to pay, and as such got fewer letters!

I think its a joke that students have to pay for a TV license but thats another story

Why shouldn't they? Because they have less money? Sod them, don't buy a TV then and actually do your Uni work.

Indeed, but they have to watch something when skiving lectures because of the lash from the night before :p

Whining scroungers, just wait until you get taxed, taxed some more, national insurance, and have to pay back those loans at £80+ a month straight from your pay. Don't forget that rent comes from the paycheck as well.

Still, student card with no expiry date = WIN @ shops :D

For those moaning that the TV licence should be optional, we're really lucky to have the BBC. Not only does it make a lot of great programming, news, huge breadth of converage etc (not to mention excellent website and pretty progressive services online / HD etc.) but it is less biased and motivated by external politics than other media organisations. I lived in the US and they are in dire need of TV of the quality of the BBC, PBS is not filling that gap. BBC is the greatest media organisation in the world!

Its all about choice, and it should be optional, same as having broadband, mobile, land lanes or sky or cable TV. You can select these services with BBC you cannot.

Its a tax on TV and has been for a while, the fee might well be worth the price, as BBC do sometimes offer decent content, but it should still be about choice.........

I think thats what gets on folks backs... Now if you watch the BBC and DO NOT pay the fee, that isn't right, and you should pay, regardless.... If on the other hand you have a TV and NEVER watch any BBC content, then why should you be forced to pay for owning a TV?

Thats not right..!!
