tell them why, say you only watch netflix/amazon and dont watch live tv.

I don't watch netflix/amazon either.

Many years ago, the adverts on TV got on my **** enough for me to stop watching TV. I know that nowadays it's much easier to avoid the adverts, but back then the only way to avoid the adverts was to program your video recorder to tape the programs you wanted to watch and then fast-forward through the adverts. Yes, it was that long ago. I've always been into books and games anyway, so I just expanded my reading and gaming to fill the time I'd previously spent watching TV. I do watch some channels on Youtube, but I find the adverts there less annoying, shorter and far less common. Google must see me as an undesirable market segment, since it quite rarely advertises at me on Youtube. I'd agree to more on some channels, if that was an option.

There's a TV in the staff room at work and sometimes someone else will have it on while I'm there so I'm forced to watch it or at least listen to it. That serves the useful purpose of reminding me why I don't want TV - I find it more annoying than entertaining. I find it bizarre how many people have the TV on even when they're not paying any attention to it, like it was as necessary as breathing. There would probably be some TV programs I'd enjoy watching, but it doesn't seem worth sorting through the dross (and paying for it) to find the specks of gold.

The TV licence pays for more than just the BBC.

Keep telling yourself that pal, whatever helps you sleep at night. The BBC have been at the forefront of this scam for years.

It might do, but the BBC are the primary benefactors and have some part to play in the enforcement process.

But then you actually knew this, you just wanted to be able to say that as a way to discredit the other poster, right?

Exactly, the BBC have always taken the lions share. They don't deserve this supplement whatsoever. If they didn't have such an obvious bias and narrative to push out it wouldn't bother me so much. They couldn't lean more to the left if they tried.

The more I look into it, the more I realise that it is not right.

It should be clearly split, so that you can choose not to fund the BBC, but be able to access other services.

It's obviously going to the left of the majority of the print/private media, who are almost exclusively owned by tycoons with their own self interests to protect, which invariably align with right-wing staples such as low tax, light regulation and small government.

The BBC isn't to the left of your average member of the British public.

I'm no fan of the BBC, the licence fee and absolutely not the licence enforcement regime. But I fear for what would happen to broadcast news in this country if it weren't for the BBC. Sure people hate them, but that's because they're doing their job properly and they can't be bought.

It should just use adverts, as do most (all?) other stations & also not be a tax.
There's no reason why anyone should pay a tax for broadcasts, when they can make money from the adverts/re-selling of shows.
It's not as if the beeb hasn't shown bias in one form or another, which I don't think should be allowed if the public are funding its existence.

IMO the more commercial aspects of the BBC ought to be funded by advertising (some of the worldwide stuff already is) and run along similar lines to channel 4. Things like the world service can come from general taxation. Radio 1, Eastenders, Top Gear could all raise plenty of revenue domestically with adverts attached to compensate for the loss of the licence fee.

After 3 and a half years of receiving threatening letters from them and ignore them as i dont watch tv, about 3 months ago they finally came around when i was in and I got grilled by a right rat who tries at every turn to get me details and wouldnt accept" The Occupier" as an answer. Finally he gave up and i advised him i dont need a licence and wont need one anytime in the near future and if i do then ill buy one.

3 monthsand no monthly pestering..... got another letter yesterday..... sigh

lol, I might have to do that one myself for a laugh.
You could save yourself so much time at the door though just by saying "I'm using my right to remain silent, will you refuse me my right?"
He will of course say no (as it would be unlawful to refuse it), so from then on don't say a word. :D It works with litter/dog **** wardens too.

tell them why, say you only watch netflix/amazon and dont watch live tv.]

and when tyou say they dont have the option, thats a lie isnt it.
they ask you to pick from the following

So why you would pick the last one which is obviously wrong.

Because that's what the person on the phone told me to pick. None of the options are true for me. I explained that and the person who answered when I rang the TV licensing number told me to tick that one.

Only watch Blu-rays, DVDs or online purchases (e.g. films, TV series)

No. I have precisely one boxed set (Game of Thrones season 1), which I bought a couple of days ago and haven't watched yet.

Only watch on demand/catch up TV (excluding BBC iPlayer) on any device such as a computer, laptop, tablet, phone etc

No. The last TV I watched at home in any way was Top Gear up until a couple of years ago.

Only watch on demand/catch up TV (excluding BBC iPlayer) on a TV

No. I don't have a TV.

Only use a TV for games/consoles

No. I don't have a TV.

Covered by a TV Licence at another address

No.

No TV receiving equipment or devices at the address

Not really. I have a PC which doesn't recieve TV but could.

There's no option for "I have a PC that I don't watch TV on and I don't have any other devices capable of receiving TV".

Anyone who litters or doesn't pick up their dog's crap is a selfish douchebag tho :p

Seriously, littering is a give-away sign of a brain-dead moron. I can't put into words how much I loathe people who litter.

Don't tell them any options, I just emailed them and said this address doesn't require a license. They of course replied asking why not and could I fill the form in. I said no and I'm not repeating myself in 2 years anything from you is going straight in the bin. We will see what happens in 2 years.

wow, such macho, very firm

It really doesn't take more than 30 seconds to fill it in and say your circumstances haven't changed.

Anyone who bends down and spreads their cheeks to some one who claims to have authority over them, is a brain dead moron.

I hate litterers, but I hate the council more, for making money of those idiots.

I would like to see littering laws enforced. Even if the fine was only a tenner, it would make a huge difference. It's now the norm around here to ignore bins even then they are literally a few feet away. It's the norm to just drop whatever a person wants to get rid of, right away. I know that Stoke-on-Trent is a notorious cesspit of a city, but it can't be that much worse than other places.

Something that I'm not really understanding is how do TVL/capita get search warrants based on little more than thinking you might be using a tv unlawfully?

Is it peoples ignorance giving the 'officers' information?

As someone who has little interest in tv, I'll likely not bother with a license in future but don't want to be jumping through hoops to prove my innocence
