TV Licence Super Thread

I just went to get a TV licence so we can watch the England game live. I thought it would be a simple matter of just take out a direct debit and then cancel next month. But the cheeky bar stewards front load it for new direct debits, so you pay the full amount in six months. In other words it costs £30 to have a licence for only a month. They can screw that. Not doing it.

If the BBC had a simple subscription model such like Netflix then I would dip in and out when there are things I wanted to watch. But their model prevents me doing that due to the front loaded cost.

Oh no!

There are signs that the fee will be expanded to include anyone who watches streaming services such as Netflix, Disney+ or Amazon Prime, with the fee potentially added to subscriptions for those services.

Then people may just not use those services to avoid paying anything to the BBC.
Can’t see Amazon etc being too happy about that.

They won't. There is no way in hell they'd get that through. The TV licence has absolutely nothing to do with those services. What next?.......people will be required to pay the licence if they play golf, or knit or had a curry over the weekend?

How can they justify that. They have nothing to do with the BBC. In fact they are competitors.

Tax the competition to fund the failing business?

All the suggestions they come up with are about forcing money from the public. Not about actually making the service worth paying for.

Nope.
Will be on council tax.
Its the only thing that makes any sense.

No way they could put it on streamers and keep track.

My Netflix would more than x2 in price. And I'd immediately cancel.

Read it again - it's not about putting it on streamers, it's about making you have a license if you watch any of the streaming services...

They'll never get passed. How would they enforce it?
If it was properly enforced people with streaming will just cancel.

Obviously the steamers will fight it.

It said about putting onto streamers? It's same article I read a while ago.
actually both interpretations (i.e. that the existing license could include streamers, and that the fee could be added to streamers)

I can't imagine it could ever be added directly. Maybe a literal amount of cash. Like 1 pound per month per streaming service.
That would be easy to admin, and probably the most acceptable to the public.

Although if they started doing things like "if you have a licence you don't pay it" it could be messy.

I'm still expecting it to end up on council tax myself.

I don't think £12 a year is going to cover the £180 they miss out on every time another person cancels their TV licence...

If they insist its a public service and are going to stop anyone opting out then everyone over 18 should have to pay it aka poll tax style why should I have to pay the same as a household with 4+ adults.

If it was, say, 2 pounds per steamer on top of the TV licence it would probably plug the gap.
But if they exempt people paying it who already pay for the licence it would have to be more yeah.

Especially as many would cancel.

But I don't think it will work. Basically what you say. The amount needed to plug the gap would make so many people cancel there'd still be a gap.

Hence why I think CT is the way it will go.

do what the french do - protect content made in the UK(culture?), say, with money from tax's on foreign media streamers

Without the National Center for Cinema and the Moving Image, many French films could never be made. But the CNC is now under attack, which could spell the end of this nearly 80-year-old institution if the far-right Rassemblement National comes to power.

Jean-Philippe Tanguy, a far-right Rassemblement National (RN) MP
..
The CNC is clearly not the politician's cup of tea. He quickly took to X, delivering a broadside with all the subtlety of a Charles Bronson shootout: "The usual little act about the CNC to tug at the heartstrings and prevent anyone from checking how it uses the €800 million in taxes that the state gives it back in the name of the French

I don't think it'll end up on council tax because it's nothing to do with councils. They were only looking at that because it's easy to do.

I think govts are coming round to the idea of simplifying the various types of income tax. While they're doing that they can just round up to pay for it.

Income tax would be another way. Which would be quite expensive for those of us who don't pay now.
Because all those who don't pay income tax or not much would get a discount. And those that do would have to pay a chunk more.
I suspect for median salary it would be similar ish. Then everyone over that would pay more than what they were before.

Still think CT is easier. Plus it gets inflation rises each year too.

But there is still the argument of why should we be forced to pay for something we don't need?

At the moment it wouldn't even be legal.

Doesn't matter.
It'll fail. If they don't. And that's worse to the government than annoying people who don't pay.
