TV Licence Super Thread

The BBC do not have separate English regional TV channels, there is some regional content e.g. news broadcasts and regional radio stations but that's not the same as a dedicated TV channel.
My brother retunes into an English station to watch cricket matches that are only available on certain stations. More than just local news content.

No I didn't miss your point at all the BBC run the world service and it is paid for out of the TV licence fee. If that’s not the case then they can sell it off to a commercial operator to run on behalf of the government and stop tapping the pockets of licence payers.
The BBC run the World Services on behalf of the Govt.

Even "if" there was a deduction for admin costs which is called into question above all the rest gets ploughed back into the BBC it doesn't go into a central pot and get spent on the NHS, Roads etc...
It has already been shown that the 'rest' does not get ploughed back into the BBC. Do try to read the posts.

Good for them then they can pay to watch it via a subscription like I do to watch Disney, Netflix etc and the TV licence can be abolished.
Do you really think any Govt is going to abolish a form of taxation when they are needing more.

Why should the English keep having to subsidise them?
There is supposedly only one country. A case of 'Little Englanderism'

If they want a referendum let them have it.
It is being denied while claiming that the Falkland Islanders wishes must be sacrosanct. Hypocritical at best.

However, it doesn’t definitively mean the writer thinks it’s false. It could simply mean “said” or “stated.”

Thanks for using AI to confirm my definition of the word 'claimed' and then still arguing with the definition :)

So channels in Punjabi, Urdu, Bengali, Gujarati, Arabic, French etc.. as well because they are all UK citizens paying for the TV licence?

I did make it very clear with what you quoted

The BBC wasn't created for the English only, it was created for the English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish.

Anyway, I will not be replying to you, I don't want another 24 hour ban but I hope I made it very clear.

The BBC licence fee should be extended to cover services other than TV and the corporation's charter review should be scrapped and made permanent, an influential group of MPs has said.

The report from the House of Commons' cross-party culture and media committee comes ahead of the government finalising its proposals for the next BBC royal charter later this year, which will set out how the broadcaster is funded, regulated and governed from 2028.

The report also said the next charter should be made permanent, so that the BBC's funding and existence is not called into question every 10 years.

"The licence fee should be reformed so it is no longer linked to the consumption of live TV or to a particular device, such as a television set," the committee said.

"This should be an easier sell to licence fee payers if expanding the base is paired with a drop in the individual cost."

So maybe lower cost, no real change of scope and less accountability if they don't have to come begging every 10 years is what I am seeing from this.

I read that article and I'm still none the wiser what is meant by

"The licence fee should be reformed so it is no longer linked to the consumption of live TV or to a particular device, such as a television set," the committee said.

The current license fee already applies to any device that can display live TV or iPlayer programmes. Breaking that sentence out to just "no longer linked to the consumption of live TV" could be applied to absolutely anything (playing a video game / watching youtube et al). What a joke.

It's going to be linked to shoes.

Anyone that has or wears a pair of shoes/trainers/slippers/ sandals/ clogs or similar, will be required to have a TV licence.

Everyone invested wants it to become an inescapable tax.
But no one wants the fallout of another cost of living increase + word "tax".

So there's a PR exercise of making it a tax without saying its a tax and trying to PR it without too much fallout.

report just reads like a meta analysis with constant links to other reports - those MP's involved have got to find something useful to do with their time.
the idea that bbc advertising would cannibalize the revenues of other media companies is interesting so netflix would incrrase in price.

Need a payment model for bbc/commercial companies netflix/amazon/.... like electricity/gas - standing charge and just pay for per minute consumption on top,
so I wouldn't be paying for this Traitors BS - does the bbc pay 'celebrities' to appear, or they pay for the media visibility.

I am so tired of this debate. Another can kicking nonsense. The BBC can survive in this world like any other company, it doesn't need consideration. Just cut it free. From this year they should have the licence cut by £20 a year until it's zero. They operate profitably in the USA on advert revenue, they can do it here.

I can not tell you how outraged I will be if they put the fee on the ISP charges.

Restore Britain for sure won't be helping the BBC force its fee on every household.

I mean over 200 Labour MPs all voted against the rape inquiry of children (no surprise), and I am sure they'll be for pushing through this indefinite BBC fee charge on everyone also.

It is understood any new cash raised under the plan will need to be spent on reviving local journalism and tackling misinformation, which has fuelled the rise of parties such as Reform UK.

Give me a ******* break, the biggest spreader of bs is the BBC itself.
It just needs to die a graceful death, then **** right off.

*caveat* i'm not a fan of reform:

**** Em if they think they can just claim a licence for their ******** content via eminent domain.

If the bbc isn't competitive, then give me a reason why it shouldnt die the death capitalism has laid out for it.

From director-general Matt Brittin..

“I’d like to see reform that allows us to be where audiences are. I think BBC content should be on Netflix, on YouTube, on TikTok, on Spotify, and Instagram, and everywhere where audiences are.

People are there because the BBC aren't you ******* imbecile.
The arrogance is almost unbelievable.

Why should the bbc be allowed to tax people who don't want to watch their guff.

This is the key thing.

I have no objection to the concept of paying for content, i like yt ad free so i pay for that, i like amazon prime so i pay for that.

The issue is that tvl has zero chill, i feel if prime or netflix or disney+ operated with the same opening salvo of "buy our **** or we'll send ENFORCERS round to talk to you about the CRIMES you're commiting by choosing to abstain from our content" there'd be riots (and rightfully so) in the streets.

If the bbc has such a wealth of popular content that people enjoy, it should have no problem operating behind a paywall or an adwall just like any other broadcast company.....

Sly.
Put the BBC content on streamers so they can charge people via those routes.

I wonder how they will implement it?

I like how they try to say it isn't fair people who don't watch the BBC don't pay for it.

Youtube is included in the latest "think of the children" social media ban. So if they went ahead with it, they can just pull from the verification data. Verified=pay up.
